Vox Day says: "A man after my own heart"

Chris's thought-provoking commentary and his sensible conservatism keeps California from falling further to the left and disappearing into the Pacific. He's a teacher, football fan and an all-around down to earth guy.

Shortest Movie Reviews Ever

Prince Caspian: It was as good as the first Narnia movie. Eddie Izzard as Reepicheep--genius.
Iron Man: Best superhero movie by a long shot. Robert Downey Jr. proves that he's one of the best actors of his generation and he does it in an action flick. It will do for him what Pirates did for Johnny Depp.
X-Men 3: didn't suck one iota. What the hell do we want from our movies every time out, Citzen Cane? I hope not.
A History of Vilolence: I appreciate when porn has a plot, but not really a fan. Sorry.
Freedomland: Weird movie. Longest monologues I've ever seen in a film. Julliane Moore always looks like she's crying.
Just Like Heaven: Surprisingly good. Reese Witherspoon is cute and the lead male actor is funny. I liked the message about not giving up on life.
The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe: Best of the year. Definitely in my all time top five.
Christmas With the Cranks: I read Skipping Christmas, but I'll spare you the comparisons. What a great illustration of Classical Republicanism.
Chicken Little: Took Lo-Lo to her first movie, so I have no idea what it was about.
Robots: Watched it at my mom's, so I have no idea what it was about.
Crash: I know it's LA and all, but not that much happens in a year. Good movie.
Alexander: Be Cool was more accurate historically. And more interesting. And less gay.
Man of the House: Tommy Lee Jones. Hot cheerleaders. Plus the characteristic theme of Man of the House is the stasis, and eventually the genre, of poststructuralist language.
Miss Congeniality 2: I refuse to admit watching this and laughing a few times.
The Pacifier: Ditto.
Cinderella Man: Great movie. Very inspiring story. Breaks your heart if you have kids.
War of the Worlds: Very good. Tim Robbins gets taken into a room and beat to death. What could be better?
The Aviator: Show me all the blueprints, Show me all the blueprints, Show me all the blueprints, Show me all the blueprints, Show me all the blueprints, Show me all the blueprints... Howard Hughs was cool nutjob.
THX 1138: Uh, you think the Star War Prequals were bad... Even Duval couldn't redeem this glorified student film.
Racing Stripes: racing cripes! racing tripe! Even my kids got bored.
The Longest Yard: I liked it, but comedies with hip hop artists are now on my list of movie genres I won't see at the theater...along with horror.
Revenge of the Sith: Seven year old inner child 1... Jaded 35 year old 0. This one will get Lucas out of a few minutes of pergatory.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: Not nearly as good as Being John Malkovich. Kind of predictable, too.
Spanglish: James L. Brooks always delivers
Mr. 3000: Bernie Mac is usually funny. Meh.
Napoleon Dynamite: Probably the coolest movie ever. Gahhh.
Be Cool: Be crap.
I Robot: Okay. Will Smith was awful.
A Day Without a Mexican: The Mexican version of The Judas Project or Left Behind
Return of the King (Extended): Outstanding
The Chronicles of Riddick: Not bad
Garden State: Merde
Friday Night Lights: I cried (seriously)
Meet the Fockers: Hoffman good
The Village: Not real scary, but cool

What is The Conservative Mindcleaner?

First Posted on Wed Jan 14, 2004

This blog is the dumping ground for my brain, not some nefarious mind control scheme. By cleaning my mind, I may find entertaining and perhaps, informative thoughts to share with all of you. Truth be told, I'm nervous because you all might see how little there is in my mind.

Anyway, this is my way of talking about all the stuff I want to without having to find someone to listen. See, I'm a bit opinionated. Even my mom thinks so. (Aren't moms supposed to find that cute?) I need to vent my opinions in order to spare my lovely wife, my swell kids and longsuffering friends and co-workers the constant stream of information and analysis I produce.

We're going to talk about politics, education, music, religion, pop culture and sports. I am a Christian conservative-high school teacher-metal head-football fan. For example, if this were week Four of the now waning NFL season, I might have written the following lament: Why do the Raiders have to play their rivals on Monday night? (relax, I know why) Why couldn't they play Chicago or Cleveland on MNF? The Raiders would easily beat them, and I wouldn't have to throw things and children at the TV. After the Raider's losses to both teams, you would have the Raider-hating pleasure of reading my rationalizations beginning with, "what had happened was..." But you won't have to worry too much about that. I'll save most of my rare football rants for next year’s Pop Warner action. My eight-year old handled his business.

I will often bring up the classroom because I'm a History teacher, but only to point out some bureaucratic nonsense or PC thuggery. Public schools are to political junkies what crack is to actual junkies: a cheap source from which to get one's fix. More often, I will make lame attempts to apply what I am currently reading to the day's events. I have a habit of reading books that are so far over my head that I have to read one sentence at a time, take a nap, then read the next sentence. In fact, the title of this blog is a play on Russell Kirk's The Conservative Mind, a perfect example of a book that's way over my head. Most often, I will throw out one of those completely weird connections I make between one thing and another that fooled my grade school principle into thinking I was gifted. What a sucker!

Lastly, I want the readers of this blog to know I am deeply humbled to be a part of your lives for as much or as little time as you can stand me. I will anticipate your feedback as a child does a Christmas present.

My mind is clean.

Friday Mix CD: 80s Alternative

Posted by Mr. Naron, Apr 28 2006, 06:26 PM

Now it's time to throw a bone to all the pasty goths and weirdos who were too complex and deep to enjoy Skynyrd and Night Ranger. It's time for 80s Alternative.

I like it a lot more now that I'm not quite as bitter, angry and intolerant as I was when I was a teenager. A lot of it still sucks, but there are some obvious standouts. In fact, my favorite band on the planet was once labled "alternative." So here's the list of bands to start us off. Remember, I have no problem replacing my picks with yours, but I ask you to give a little explanation for the liner notes.

Cover Art
IPB Image

Liner Notes

Just Like Heaven--The Cure: Although if you're looking for a selection that won't freak out your spouse/kids/neighbors/etc. Just Like Heaven is the one. It's the kind of song that takes me right back to the time and place when I first heard it. To this day, when I hear it I get a wistful feeling because it reminds me of a girl that got away from me. Which is silly because right now I can't even think of who that might have been. It was clearly true love... (Canucklehead Pick)

Girlfriend in a Coma--The Smiths: I remember secretly thinking this song wasn't half bad back in high school. (djanggo pick)

Nirvana--The Cult: I like Love Removal Machine and Firewoman more than this one, but it has a bit more an alternative feel to it. (Dodgerking band pick)

No One is to Blame--Howard Jones: "still can send me back to driving down to Park Point in Duluth, MN in a convertable on a warm early summer night just after my HS graduation....." (Renwaa pick)

Istanbul (Not Constantinople)--They Might Be Giants: This is a borderline novelty song, but so are many alternative songs. Plus this is from 1990, so it brings up that whole debate about when a decade starts. Either way, it was on an episode of The Simpsons. (Mollywalk band pick)

Out of Control--U2: One of the coolest moments in their current live shows is when they start into this song, their first single. Since I always see them in LA, Bono talks about hearing it on KROQ for the first time and how excited they were. I for one would have never thought they would go on to be as big as they are. But I'm glad they did.

Head On--The Jesus and Mary Chain: This is a really cool band because they remind me of Acoustic Shack meets Reckless Ways. Of course none of you know who those bands are because they're alternative Christian rock bands who were probably influenced by this band, but since i never really gave this one a chance, that's all I have to go on. Cool song.

Love My Way--The Psychadelic Furs: Hard to choose between this and Pretty in Pink, so I think I'll save the latter for an upcoming soundtrack mix.

Lips Like Sugar--Echo and the Bunnymen: I think I beat someone up for turning off my Skynyrd CD and putting this on at a party once. I like it now because I sing it in a weird voice while we're driving and it cracks my son up pretty good. (I think it's because I change the chorus to "tastes like sugar, but not like sugar")

I'll Be You--The Replacements: This is post high school, but I remember talking with the singer/bass player of Reckless Ways about this song and we both just started singing it. He sounds just like Paul Westerberg.

It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)--R.E.M.: Remember how we thought it was almost like a punk song and that it was so fast? Now it seems so quaint. Still a great alternative rock song.

Synchronicity II--The Police: I love how they come out the bridge on this song. There's nothing remarkable about it, I just like it. Can't explain why.

Some names there that I haven't heard for a long time...

The only group from the list that I was really into at the time was The Cure - anything from Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me would be a good choice. The opening track (Kiss) is deeply weird and intense - so very different from the rest of the album but still very "Cure-ish".

You haven't got them on the list, but may I also suggest Love and Rockets or Tones On Tail? They're basically the same band (featuring Daniel Ash and Kevin Haskins) and one or both would fit in with what you have. It's hard to pick out any one particular song but if I'll give them both a listen tonight and see if I can't pick one out.

Oh man, I haven't thought of them in forever. Thanks for the suggestions. I'm enjoying the search for these songs way more than I thought I would. I was just doing this to add a little variety. (IMG:http://www.rightnation.us/forums/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Cool suggestions. It's hard to nail down what is and isn't "alternative." I'm kind of going by what KROQ in LA used to play back in the 80s. I hated a lot of it back then, so I called it KFAG. Now, I kind of dig some of that stuff. Maybe I should a pull a My Name is Earl and find that goth fairy we used to pick on and apologize for breaking his Cure records.

In high school during the 80's all of my friends listened to KROQ; I couldn't stand that station and I still can't stand them. I used to listen to KMET when they existed and I have always and continue to listen to KLOS.

I do not like most of the 80's alterntive, but I do like groups like U2 and INXS. I do not consider them alternative however. Another group I liked during that time that got played on KROQ and were considered alternative, even though I actually consider them Metal, is The Cult.

The Cult started off as a little fruity goth band, but they started rocking hard in the late 80s/early 90s. Firewoman and Love Removal Machine kick some serious butt.

I remember KMET. That was my favorite station, even ahead of KLOS. It was a dark day when it went easy listening.

  Renwaa, Apr 28 2006, 11:44 PM

My favorites were all over the musical spectrum, but these 4 stand out:

Violent Femmes - Add It Up (the only one I like and still the best they did)

Talking Heads - Little Creatures (love it, still listen regularly--in fact, am listening now!)

"Give me Back My Name"

There’s a word for it
And words don’t mean a thing
There’s name for it
And names make all the difference in the world
Some things can never be spoken
Some things cannot be pronounced
That word does not exist in any language
It will never be uttered by a human mouth

Howard Jones - if he counts as alternative. The song "No One is to Blame" still can send me back to driving down to Park Point in Duluth, MN in a convertable on a warm early summer night just after my HS graduation.....

The Rainmakers - Awesome!! No one has ever heard of them, but they're from KC. SITE HERE Saw them open for the Doobie Brothers in 1989. They released 2 songs on the radio, one called "Let my people go go" and "Downstream".

"Let My People Go-Go" (go HERE TO LISTEN! IT'S AWESOME!!!!)

Moses went up to the mountain high
To find out from god why did you make us why
Secret words in a secret room
He said a womp bop a lu bop a lop bam boom

I did not put you here to suffer
I did not put you here to whine
I put you here to love one another
And to get out and have a good time

Let my people go-go-go
Let my people go-go-go
Let my people go-go-go
Let my people go

Joshua fit de battle of Jericho
He tell the boys with the horns get down and blow
They rear back aim they bells at the stars
And said beat me big daddy eight to the bar

(chorus)

Jesus went out for a walk with his mother
The scribes and the pharisees plotting hugger-mugger
They locked him up and they threw away the key
He said why’s everybody always picking on me?

Great thread Chris! What memories!!!!!! (IMG:http://www.rightnation.us/forums/style_emoticons/default/hug.gif)

Cool song. Kind of reminds me of the B-52s crossed with Timbuk 3. I love Talking Heads. I'm definietly going to include one of their songs. Probably the Violent Femmes, too. Howard Jones is a possibility. I love No one is to Blame.

Regarding the Rainmakers:

You can see/hear "Downstream" from the Rainmakers HERE (Quicktime)

I love their lyrics and they were so unusual at the time that I fell in love with their sound instantly. These 2 next songs are also killer:

You've got "The Wages of Sin"

"The Wages Of Sin" by The Rainmakers from _Tornado_
---------------------------------------------------
I was praying last night when an angel broke the line
She said "I'm gonna have to put you on hold for a time"
I said "Hold like Hell, let me talk to the Boss"
She said "Sorry sucker (sinner), it's the Boss's day off"
And I realized then that the wages of sin
Was two bucks an hour and working weekends

I was ignoring the thief who was lashed to the cross
He cried "Help me get this son-of-a-bitch off"
I said "I would if I could, I can't so I won't
Well I wouldn't want you messing your hair up, so don't"
And I realized then that the wages of sin
Was all the lumber you can carry, all the nails you can bend

The wages of sin, the price that you pay
Is worrying and fretting every second of the day
If Heaven is guilt, no sex and no show
Then I'm not sure if I really want to go, Oh

The wages of sin, the reward of fear
Is worrying and fretting every second of the year
The Church and the State, your God and Countrykind
One gets your body, the other gets your mind

Mary, Mary Magdalene, how 'bout a date?
You've been wasting your time staying up so late
Your boyfriend's dead, the word is you're a whore
Just about then I heard a knock on the door
And I realized then that the wages of sin
Was a bad reputation and too many friends

The wages of sin (repeats)

"Government Cheese"

album: The Rainmakers

Give a man a free house and he'll bust out the windows
Put his family on food stamps, now he's a big spender
no food on the table and the bills ain't paid
'Cause he spent it on cigarettes and P.G.A.
They'll turn us all into beggars 'cause they're easier to please
They're feeding our people that Government Cheese

Give a man a free lunch and he'll figure out a way
To steal more than he can eat 'cause he doesn't have to pay
Give a woman free kids and you'll find them in the dirt
Learning how to carry on the family line of work
It's the man in the White House, the man under the steeple
Passing out drugs to the American people
I don't believe in anything, nothing is free
They're feeding our people the Government Cheese

Decline and fall, fall down baby
Decline and fall, said fall way down now
Decline and fall, fall down little mama
Decline and fall, decline and fall

Give a man a free ticket on a dead end ride
And he'll climb in the back even though nobody's driving
Too goddamn lazy to crawl out of the wreck
And he'll rot there while he waits for the welfare check
Going to hell in a handbag, can't you see
I ain't gonna eat no Government Cheese

================================================================

I wish I could link the audio, but can't find any clips to share. The first 2 albums are the best, IMO.

  wag-a-muffin, Apr 29 2006, 01:32 PM

Would They Might Be Giants fit in here? They are usually found in the "Alternative" section.

"Purple Toupee"
"Dinner Bell"
(The Ultimate college song) "I Should Be Allowed To Think"
A song about physics "Why Does The Sun Shine? (The Sun Is a Mass of Incandescent Gas)"
A song about biology "Mammal"

And my all time favorite, Dr. Worm.

(They call me dr. worm. I'm not a real doctor but I am a real worm.)

Although, now that TMBG are writing for Higglytown Heroes, and Malcolm in the Middle, they are probably hopelessly sell out pop.

Too bad. Their music is so strange.

It doesn't matter if they've sold out. If they were once considered alternative, that's good enough for me. I'm not an outcast, greedily protecting my music like no one else is good enough to listen to it. U2 were alternative once and now they're the biggest act on the planet.

(BTW, wanna do some cover art? (IMG:http://www.rightnation.us/forums/style_emoticons/default/pray.gif) )

================================================================

I wish I could link the audio, but can't find any clips to share. The first 2 albums are the best, IMO.

Those are some cool lyrics. I can see why you liked them.

Ok, you lost me on this one (IMG:http://www.rightnation.us/forums/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) . These bands really hit the nostalgia button for me and allowed me to recall just why I listened to Country music for most of that decade (IMG:http://www.rightnation.us/forums/style_emoticons/default/lengua9ep.gif) .

I thought I was going to have to hold my nose on this one, but I'm finding that I like more of it than I thought I would. Goes to show you how bad new music is. (Wait until I do that CD. (IMG:http://www.rightnation.us/forums/style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) )

Yeah, over the years I have learned to appreciate this style of music, but....I dunno, I even bought a U2 album (well, a used cassette) and ......... (IMG:http://www.rightnation.us/forums/style_emoticons/default/headscratch.gif) .......I just don't get it. So, maybe those who DO get this style of music can try to pick out, not only the best songs, but the songs in which non-fans will enjoy and be enticed to dig deeper into the genre. [Kinda like your "Country Music For Those Who Hate Country Music" (or whatever that title was) mix CD.] Then maybe, just maybe, I'll search out some of these songs and see if I was missing something. Which U2 album was it? If you're a country fan, you might like The Joshua Tree and Rattle and Hum.

Here's some They Might Be Giant Lyrics.
Read 'em and learn.

(And I'd be happy to do a cover, you want my cartoony baby stuff on Alternative Rock????)

Toddler Hiway

In the mornin' sun 'round seven o'clock
The parking lot fills around Toys-R-Us
And my little girl, she will get away
Ride her bike down Toddler Hiway
Take your Close 'n' Play
Toddler Hiway

Shoehorn With Teeth

He wants a shoehorn, the kind with teeth
People should get beat up for stating their beliefs
He wants a shoehorn, the kind with teeth
Because he knows there's no such thing

He asks a girl if they can both sit in a chair but he doesn't get nervous
She's not really there

He wants a shoehorn, the kind with teeth
Because he knows there's no such thing

Tour the world in a heavy metal band
But they run out of gas
The plane can never land

He wants a shoehorn, the kind with teeth
People should get beat up for stating their beliefs
He wants a shoehorn, the kind with teeth
Because he knows there's no such thing

What's the sense in ever thinking about the tomb
When you're much too busy returning to the womb?

He wants a shoehorn, the kind with teeth
People should get beat up for stating their beliefs
He wants a shoehorn, the kind with teeth
Because he knows there's no such thing

Whistling in the Dark

A woman came up to me and said
"I'd like to poison your mind
With wrong ideas that appeal to you
Though I am not unkind"
She looked at me, I looked at something
Written across her scalp
And these are the words that it faintly said
As I tried to call for help:

There's only one thing that I know how to do well
And I've often been told that you only can do
What you know how to do well
And that's be you,
Be what you're like,
Be like yourself,
And so I'm having a wonderful time
But I'd rather be whistling in the dark
Whistling in the dark
Whistling in the dark
Whistling in the dark
Whistling in the dark
Whistling in the dark
There's only one thing that I like
And that is whistling in the dark

A man came up to me and said
"I'd like to change your mind
By hitting it with a rock," he said,
"Though I am not unkind."
We laughed at his little joke
And then I happily walked away
And hit my head on the wall of the jail
Where the two of us live today.

There's only one thing that I know how to do well
And I've often been told that you only can do
What you know how to do well
And that's be you,
Be what you're like,
Be like yourself,
And so I'm having a wonderful time
But I'd rather be whistling in the dark
Whistling in the dark
Whistling in the dark
Whistling in the dark
Whistling in the dark
Whistling in the dark
There's only one thing that I like
And that is whistling in the dark

There's only one thing that I know how to do well
And I've often been told that you only can do
What you know how to do well
And that's be you,
Be what you're like,
Be like yourself,
And so I'm having a wonderful time
But I'd rather be whistling in the dark
Whistling in the dark
Whistling in the dark
Whistling in the dark
Whistling in the dark
Whistling in the dark
Whistling, whistling
Whistling in the dark

And my personal favorite:

Dr. Worm

They call me Dr. Worm
Good morning. How are you? I'm Dr. Worm
I'm interested in things
I'm not a real doctor
But I am a real worm
I am an actual worm
I live like a worm

I like to play the drums
I think I'm getting good
But I can handle criticism
I'll show you what I know
And you can tell me if you think I'm getting better on the drums
I'll leave the front un-locked 'cause I can't
Hear the doorbell

When I get into it I can't tell if you are
Watching me twirling the stick
When I give the signal, my friend
Rabbi Vole will pay the solo

Some day somebody else besides me will
Call me by my stage name, they will
Call me Dr Worm
Good Morning how are you, I'm Dr Worm
I'm interested in things
I'm not a real doctor
But I am a real worm
I am an actual worm
I live like a worm

I like to play the drums
I think I'm getting good
But I can handle criticism
I'll show you what I know
And you can tell me if you think I'm getting better on the drums
I'm not a real doctor
But they call me Dr. Worm

Hey, they did Istanbul (Not Constantinople), and it was on The Simpsons. So they're cool.

(Your style would be perfect for this CD)
