Help Topic: How to Properly Post News Articles

How to post news articles in the forum

A big part of the forum is the sharing of articles with other members. If you will be posting an article to the forum, please follow these guidelines.

You can post an article with the intention of additionally causing its topic title to display in the "Latest Headlines" column on the home page if you wish. To do this, select the white post icon at the bottom of the posting page. ALWAYS use this White Icon for a news article, unless it is inappropriate for the "Latest Headlines" column. And, MAKE SURE TO USE THE ACTUAL ARTICLE HEADLINE AS THE TOPIC TITLE.

If you do not feel the article is important enough for the "Latest Headlines" column, simply do not select the white icon.

If you see that the article icon has been removed, do not re-flag it; a moderator must have decided that the article was not appropriate for the "Latest Headlines" column.

NOTE: Only flagged articles in the MAIN category of forums will be displayed on the home page. There is no reason to flag topics in any other forums. In addition, only those in the Community Supporter user group are allowed to start a new topic in the MAIN category of forums. For further info on user groups, please read this Help topic.

Do not post any article/excerpt with an Associated Press byline no matter the source.

As the web site becomes more popular, and more people post articles, we need to become more selective in our choice of articles to display on the home page, and even to just be included in the forums alone. Too many articles, especially those of a similar nature to some already posted, or those of too narrow an interest level, will cause the good stuff to roll off the pages too quickly.

For the popular forums, and for articles you will flag for home page display, select articles that have a broad appeal and whose subject matter and article content will generate discussion. We are not a news service, feeling we must post all the news. Instead, we are a community looking for the interesting news items to discuss. Keep that in mind when evaluating articles.

Always check to see if an article, or a very similar article, has already been posted. If your article is in the same vein as another article already published, you may instead add it to the existing topic. This will help keep the discussion on the topic going, rather than distributing it among several topics which will tend to kill the entire discussion.

In general, we cannot allow the posting of complete articles. There are copyright issues at stake, but most importantly, we appreciate the source and wish to drive traffic to their site as well.

However, you may include an excerpt that provides some content from the article. This could be several paragraphs, and not necessarily the first ones. The point is to provide enough to give a basic idea of what the article is about, but not enough to keep the reader from clicking on the link to go to the source for more.

The critical items to include with the excerpt:

[*] Article title - For this, place the headline as the first line of the post. Use the SIZE code to make the headline stand out. Size=5 (large) works well. When you create the topic, use the actual article headline for your topic title. This makes it easy to search for duplicates before posting. And, NO ALL UPPER CASE TITLES.

    [*] Publication name and date

    [*] Author

[*] An indication that the text in the topic is just an excerpt. Place the word “EXCERPT:” just before the body of the excerpted text begins works well.

    [*] Source URL

Note that you often times have to "fix up" the paragraphs you have cut and paste in the article. In particular, please remove any extra blank lines, leaving only one between paragraphs; and, if there are no blank lines between paragraphs, please add them.

[/list]By following these guidelines, you help save us lots of time, and you’ll respect the copyrights of the publications we rely on for information.

Here is an example of a properly posted story.

Spike Lee, Viacom Settle Name Dispute

      by John Doe

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Movie director Spike Lee (news) and Viacom Inc. on Monday settled a legal fight over the U.S. media conglomerate's plans to rebrand its TNN cable network as "Spike TV," representatives for both sides said.

Terms of the settlement were not disclosed but Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Walter Tolub lifted an order that he had issued last month barring Viacom from using the "Spike" name.

A source familiar with the situation told Reuters the lawsuit was being withdrawn and that TNN would proceed with its planned name change.
