Tennessee manhunt: New images released of student and teacher
Updated 2:05 PM ET, Fri March 31, 2017

(CNN)The Tennessee teacher and 15-year-old girl who are the subject of a manhunt were spotted at a Walmart in Oklahoma City earlier this month, the first confirmed sighting of the two since officials say the teacher kidnapped the girl.

Tad Cummins, 50, is suspected of abducting Elizabeth Thomas, his former student in Maury County, Tennessee, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI).
Thomas has been missing since March 13, weeks after a student reported she saw the pair kissing, police say.

Surveillance images released Friday show Cummins and Thomas at a Walmart on East I-240 Service Road in Oklahoma City on the afternoon of March 15.

What a pretty young girl sees in a middle aged fat guy is beyond me. They don't seem to be trying very hard to hide or disguise themselves however.
Is this truly an abduction?

Yeah she's not abducted, this looks like she's with him of her own free will. It's still illegal but she's "in loooovvvveeee".

The age of consent in Tennessee is 18 so any sex with someone under 18 is statutory rape, not forced rape. Legally he can't go with him even it is willingly and since he crossed state lines that is a federal offense. He is going to do some real time in a real prison for a long time. More than likely he will die in prison. Maybe that's his retirement plan.

I think there was a B-movie of this back in the '70s. The title escapes me at the moment.

Seriously, though - I'm not so old that I don't recall being an impressionable schoolkid. (Hey! I heard that! NO, I'm really not THAT old).

I can recall at least 5 teachers (Miss P--- 2nd grade, Miss H--- 5th grade, Mr S--- 5th grade, Mr. D--- 9th grade, Miss D--- (no relation) 9th grade.) whom, if they'd asked, I'd have done. Fortunately, wiser heads prevailed - THEIRS, not mine.

And, lest anyone go "there" - My fascination with all was for ENTIRELY different reasons. Mr S was a math genius. Mr D on civics and politics. Miss P, Miss H, Miss D, Oh lord, I'd have payed good money for photos of them naked. I should go to confessional for that except that I'm Quaker not Catholic and we don't have confession. (whew! I dodged THAT bullet.)

You were lucky-I went to Catholic grade school and the few teachers that weren't nuns were old ladies!
(although I will admit to dating my French teacher in college)

In 10th grade I had a poetry teacher who looked like Billy Jack and rode a motorcycle. Yeah, I could have been talked into anything. But this much older, married weirdo? I just don't get it.
Hopefully she survives this thing.

Initial reports said he had two handguns in his possession when they... eloped(?). It's possible they have a lovers' suicide pact in case they're cornered. Or he may release her and eat a hollow-point. Either way, my money is on him not surviving this.

As for how Elizabeth Thomas ended up in this, her sister recently said she had "been through a lot" (Doesn't every teenager feel that way? Sheesh, just wait until you're an adult starting your own business or taking care of an elderly parent.) and Cummins used that to manipulate her. Who knows. But they've been on the run almost a month and there's only been one confirmed spotting? With commercial businesses all over the country covered in security cameras? Something seems kinda <_< about that.

You're right, of course. But I am sure you realize that while all teenagers believe they have 'been through a lot', they are also convinced this is unique to themselves. Teenage angst is what makes them so easy to manipulate by skeevy predators like this guy.

Whether she realizes it or not, this girl is the victim.

Yes, they easily convince themselves that "nobody" can understand them. Then some silver-tongued guy (or lesbian) comes along. And it doesn't have to be somebody their dad's age, it could just as easily be a classmate, their older brother's friend home from college for the holidays, her coach on the girls' basketball team, etc.

Oh, and teenage angst also sells albums. And these days, tattoos.

In all likelihood, yes. One of my grandmothers married at 13, but those were different times (and my grandfather was quite young as well). I doubt this girl has fully considered her life ahead, being with a 70-year-old when she's 35.

Depends on the "Been through a lot".

Just PURE speculation, an 'educated guess', but this COULD fit the profile of someone who's been previously abused by an older adult who was an authority figure in her life.

Normally, you'd think a teen who was abused by an older adult would be averse to other adults. But the mind plays funny tricks sometimes. Abuse victims tend to end up with low self-esteem with thoughts ranging from "what did I do to deserve this?" to "it must be all my fault". End result being that they latch onto to the first older adult that's actually nice to them. And tend to go overboard; the normal psychological barriers that would inhibit a person are longer there because those barriers were destroyed by the original abuse.

What's worse is that predators know this. They know this because most predators were abused themselves and it becomes a vicious cycle. They know the void in the victim's life because it was missing in their own life, and as predators they become adept at appearing to be what it takes to fill that void.

I totally forgot about that angle. Good point.

Growing up, I knew girls in the neighborhood and at school who had been abused, but didn't know about the abuse until I was much older. At the time, I couldn't understand why girls who were 12, 10, even 5, were so aggressive sexually. One would think that sexual abuse victims would shun sex because of all the negative history they had with it. It was only a few years ago that I learned how some abuse victims, having been controlled through sex, use sex to control others and keep from being controlled again.

I'm not suggesting the girl in this case is the aggressor, by the way. The scenario is probably more like you describe. We may never know, however, as they seem to be as difficult to find as a Malaysian airliner.

That's good.
This guy is pretty cracked. I feel bad for his wife (soon to be ex-wife) and children.

This perv bought Cialis, a lubricant for women, and booked a motel with one bed for his adventure with the teenager. I think he has convicted himself.

If *I* were judge/jury/executioner?

FOR THE GUY:
? Let's just say that they'd have to redefine the whole concept of "going medieval". And Dude was 50-ish. By that age, you're supposed to be older and wiser. (mid 50s myself, I at least qualify on the "older" part). Help the upcomers, not take advantage of them.

FOR THE GIRL: Let it slide. She was 15YO. People at 15 do stupid things for stupid reasons. 'nuff said, though I could speak volumes on the subject from experience. Let it go at that.

The girl needs therapy and lots of it. She's in need of something, and unfortunately this cretin was there to convince her he was that thing. Maybe he convinced himself of it too.
His plan was so badly thought out I can't help thinking he has some mental disability. It may as well have been two 15 year olds.

Yeah, it's nothing new or shocking when a 15-year-old kid is too young and inexperienced to understand the difference between a teenage schoolgirl crush and "true love". She's by no means the first, nor will she be the last. She doesn't really deserve condemnation for her mistake. Let's hope she learns from this.

He, on the other hand, is old enough to know better. He deserves no mercy or sympathy. Even if he does have some sort of mental disability (as Ladybird suggests), he still needs to be put someplace where he can't harm anybody else.
