Much Of Manhattan Goes Dark As Con Ed Equipment Fails, Blacking Out Midtown, Upper West Side, And Times Square

New York Daily News
By Thomas Tracy and Bill Sanderson
Jul 13, 2019 | 7:24 PM

Excerpt:

Broadway went dark along with much of Midtown and the Upper West Side on Saturday night when a Con Ed equipment failure cut power to hundreds of thousands of people in Manhattan.

Straphangers were led out of subway tunnels, firefighters responded to numerous reports of people trapped in elevators, and more than a dozen Broadway shows went dark for the night after the outage hit just before 7 p.m.

The blackout hit 42 years to the day after the massive 1977 power outage that wiped out electricity across nearly all of the city.

We are responding to extensive outages on the west side of Manhattan, said Con Ed spokesman Michael Clendenin. Its equipment issues, and we are working to restore customers.

More than 42,000 Con Ed customers had lost electricity by around 8 p.m.

Clendenin didnt know how long the power might be out. City Council Speaker Corey Johnson said Con Ed executives told him they hoped to have power back by midnight.

Subway service was stalled in Manhattan and Queens on all the lines designated by letters, which the MTA calls its B Division.

Were trying to get people out of subways. Were trying to get people out of elevators. Its a big mess, said an MTA source.

The system needs to be more distributed. Its too easy to mess up, by accident or incidentally, the current system with huge hubs.

I was reading a report about NYC's power grid last night and saw something interesting. Some of the wiring systems are the original wiring installed by Thomas Edison over 100 years ago. A Con-Ed supervisor said they still have to use A/C to D/C converters. Edison's system was DC.

Good lord, the amount of power lost doing this adds up. So much for DNC/Leftist run cities caring about efficiency and reducing green house gasses.
