De Blasio Wants To Spend $10B To Make Manhattan Bigger

New York Post
By Julia Marsh
March 14, 2019 | 9:43am

Excerpt:

New York City is about to get a little bigger.

Mayor Bill de Blasio plans to spend $10 billion to “climate proof” lower Manhattan by building out the coastline by two blocks into the East River from the Brooklyn Bridge to the Battery.

“It will be one of the most complex environmental and engineering challenges our city has ever undertaken and it will, literally, alter the shape of the island of Manhattan,” the mayor wrote in a New York Magazine op-ed.

The buildout will include a half-billion dollars for “grassy berms in parks and removable barriers that can be anchored in place as storms approach,” according to the mayor.

The eastern edge of Lower Manhattan — South Street Seaport and the Financial District — is just 8 feet above the waterline and packed with utilities, sewers and subway lines. So that area will be buttressed by 500 feet, or up to two city blocks, of new land.

“When we complete the coastal extension, which could cost $10 billion, Lower Manhattan will be secure from rising seas through 2100,” de Blasio wrote.

He also took a swing at the commander-in-chief, saying, “Nowhere in the $4.75 trillion budget President Trump just proposed is there anything approaching a plan to protect our coastal cities from rising seas.”

De Blasio, it really is this simple: there actually are bad people coming through a porous border attracted by sympathetic policies enacted by Democrats as a means to gain votes. There is, in fact, an emergency on our southern border. Ergo, we should do something about that - and a hi-tech wall is a GREAT solution. There is, in fact, no evidence that sea levels are threatening to flood our coastal cities in the next 1,000 years. Maybe in the next 20K-30K years, but not anytime soon. Therefore, there is NO emergency to try to protect our cities from so-called "rising sea levels". Any idiot can understand the differences here. Which, I guess is why you don't understand it. pat-pat

edit to add:
The moon is moving away from Earth by a fraction of an inch every year. We need to DO SOMETHING about that!!!!!!! Let's tax everyone at 100% and put all of that money into building a giant rail that keeps the moon in it's current orbit. You know, we need to defeat LUNAR ORBIT CHANGE!!!!!!!

Seems like a good idea when you're teetering on bankruptcy.

The Big Dig in Boston started out as a 2.5 Billion dollar project....At the end it cost 15 Billion dollars

When a lowlife politician asks for 10 Billion multiply that by at least 3x

Since he doesn't have an ounce of common sense inside his Wilhelmian head, he chooses to continue wasting more and more of my hard earned $$.

Yes, but has the mayor ordered a study on the impact this will have on the habitat of the endangered teenage mutant ninja turtle?

And the hard-earned money of my brother and sister-in-law, who, despite popular opinion around here, didn't vote for De Blasio either.

Oh, he's still going full steam ahead with that idea. Of course, since most working people get health insurance through their jobs, that leaves illegals to overwhelmingly benefit from his latest socialist scheme.

Hey - even more of my tax $$ being wasted.

Can't wait to get to Arizona.

Well, he's going to use AOC's theory that they can just print more money to cover the costs of this boondoggle since they're literally at the bottom of the empty barrel right now...

I think lefties are onto something. I mean, why don’t we as a world just decide to get along and stop working and make just good things happen? We’ll print money and give everyone gold and diamonds and apple stock. We’ll pay for it all like we always do, we just pay for it.

Well, I guess I don't quite get it. If he builds his 500ft of shoreline above the 8ft the lands already at, he's basically built a bowl that will hold any rain/snow that comes. If he builds it at 8ft or lower, then if the coastal waters rise, it'll still all get flooded anyways. The only real fix would be to increase the elevation beyond 8ft. But if there's already buildings and infrastructure there... good luck.

LOL

Here we go again - Yet another in a long line of articles where I had to double-check to make sure I wasn't reading the Babylon Bee. I mean sheesh, this is "hold-my-beer-and-watch-this"-level stupidity, but in the billions of dollars range. It's just beyond logical comprehension how anybody can really be this stupifyingly out of touch with reality.
