Poor People Not Allowed In AOC's Luxury Apartment Complex

Washington Examiner
by Alana Goodman
February 19, 2019 02:43 PM

Excerpt:

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., recently moved into a luxury apartment complex in Washington, D.C. that does not offer the affordable housing units that were a key plank in the New York congresswoman’s campaign platform.

Ocasio-Cortez, 29, who said in November that she was concerned about being able to afford rent in D.C., now earns a $174,000 annual salary and is living in a newly built high-rise in the city’s Navy Yard area, the Washington Free Beacon reported last week.

The freshman congresswoman, a self-described socialist, campaigned on a platform to expand affordable housing, and her controversial Green New Deal proposal promises “Safe, affordable, adequate housing” for all.

But Ocasio-Cortez’s new building — built by leading D.C. developer WC Smith — is part of a luxury complex whose owners specifically do not offer affordable units under Washington, D.C.’s Affordable Dwelling Units program. The Washington Examiner is not naming the building or complex.

In 2018, a civil rights attorney sued the Washington, D.C. government for allegedly discriminatory gentrification policies, claiming that development in Navy Yard area and other parts of southeast D.C. encouraged an influx of affluent “millennial creatives” who displaced minority residents.

Ocasio-Cortez, commonly referred to as "AOC," repeatedly criticized luxury real estate developers during her campaign, claiming that their buildings hiked up rent prices and pushed low-income residents out of their neighborhoods.

“We need to kick luxury real estate lobbyists to the curb and defend working people’s way of life,” Ocasio-Cortez said last March. “Skyrocketing cost of living is a national crisis that CAN be addressed. It’s not just an NYC issue - it’s happening in every US metro area.”

Ocasio-Cortez also promised not to take campaign contributions from luxury developers during her campaign. “It’s time we stand up to the luxury developer lobby,” she said in a speech last April. “Every official is too scared to do it - except me.”

Her new apartment complex — which boasts on its website that it vows to take "luxury apartment living" to a higher level — offers over 100,000 square feet of amenities for its residents.

These include: two private massage rooms with state-of-the-art hydrotherapy beds; men’s and women’s saunas; a full-scale demonstration kitchen with wood-fired pizza oven; a 25-meter indoor lap pool; a rooftop infinity pool with panoramic views of the Capitol; a Peloton cycling studio with over a dozen bikes; and a fireside lounge featuring a Steinway & Sons player piano.

She also lives within a 16 minute walk of the legislative offices, but drives to work every day. Yep, she is very good at Socialism!

JEEZ. Area around Washington Navy Yard must've changed. Early '80s, ANYTHING with a "SE" DC address was a crap-hole INCLUDING WNY. Was station there. Best I could find off-base was, for $200/mo as I recall, not an apartment but a "room" in a 3-story townhouse at 3rd & F Northwest (long since torn down). But I had "cooking privileges" in the shared kitchen and there was a Safeway within walking distance so I made the most of it. (Y'all would be surprised how many friends you can make if you can cook. And, YES, I can wash my own pots and pans. In fact I prefer to.)

I doubt AOC could survive in such an environment. She strikes me as the type that expects everything to be be handed to her without out being willing to either cook OR clean up.

PBS had an excellent series on "The Greeks" from antiquity to modern. One of the episodes about modern had an artist complaining about, "These people want everything. Prepared. In a dish." We're becoming Greece.

If she had half a brain, she would be trying to put some of that away so she would have something to fall back on when she's ousted in two years and needs something to live on while looking for her new bar tending job.

What a gulag comrade Crazy-Cotex stays in to keep in touch with the people's struggle! Amenities include a shuttle service of tractor rides to the salt mines while everyone heroically sings "The Internationale", no doubt.

If AOC does believe in socialism, then I would like for her to share her salary with me. http://www.rightnation.us/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/eyebrows.gif

Doesn't she get a pension for the rest of her little Socialist life? I thought I read somewhere that a member of Congress gets paid a pension even if they serve only 2 years.

A.O.C. Always on crazy is proof that it wasn't her brains which earned her a degree from Boston U.
I am thinking enrollment may be down some in the coming years.

My mother-in-law lives in a country once apart of the USSR. She teaches in a high school that was once the sprawling estate of some Soviet bigshot who ran that municipality. Literally hundreds and hundreds of kids go to school in one guy's old house - all the while you can still see (or live) in the old apartment blocks where entire families lived in apartments smaller than my bedroom.

Funny/sad story - she does translating work on the side and took a job translating for some multinational company that was going to do business in Belarus, which is still much closer to being like the old days. Being a multi-day conference/meeting, the local official asked them on Saturday if the group liked shows/performances and the visiting group said yes. He got on the phone and called the owner of some playhouse and demanded they call all of their performers and tell them to get there ASAP. In a little more than an hour, they were all treated to a show - put on by these poor people that had no choice but to do as commanded or else. She said it was a little awkward knowing they were doing this against their wishes on their day off but she was just along for the ride.

I understand why Bernie and others push Socialism/Communism as they 'got theirs' and will presumably be the ones with the power, the big house, and all the perks. I get why uneducated morons think it would be great, or the promise of free everything would be great. I don't understand how any of the Left who have even the slightest education or knowledge of history but aren't 'royalty' think it will somehow be good for them or their children. Cognitive dissonance I guess.
