I went to Catholic schools mostly and graduated HS 1981. Discipline, including corporal punishment was, "in full swing". Most of my teachers in HS had paddles and or wiffle ball bats or the occasional wooden handled dust brush. Not that I condone physical violence but it was a very different time and place and there was zero tolerance for disrespect or any other infraction like insubordination. If you talked back you get demerits possible suspension. More serious infractions could easily result in expulsion and if you threatened or assaulted a teacher you were leaving cuffed in the back of a squad car never to be seen again- at least not in Catholic School. But the main reason today are the parents. Disrespect is a learned behavior that usually starts at home. It is sad for kids growing up now without that.
