Twenty-five million illegals or more are present in the U.S. – way more than the generally used estimate of 11 million illegals. No wonder that California, New York, and other states, plus a coalition of at least 175 organizations don't want Americans to know the real number. They have sued to get a federal judge to stop the Census Bureau from asking this question on the 2020 Census: "Are you a U.S. citizen?"

How do we know that the number of illegals in the country is more than twice the number generally assumed? Commerce secretary Ross, who oversees the Census Bureau and who made the decision to include the question, has already said as much. In announcing that the citizenship question would again be included on the 2020 Census, for the first time since the 1950 Census, Secretary Ross provided an eight-page explanation for including the question.

Secretary Ross did not need to provide any explanation, but he correctly anticipated an uproar followed by litigation. Among other points, he noted the need for a reliable calculation of the citizen voting-age population in order to meet the Commerce Department's obligations under the Voting Rights Act.

The left, however, certainly would not believe that the Trump administration was attempting to comply with the Voting Rights Act. Regardless, a number of state attorneys general had requested that information. Without such information, the states they represent will be ill equipped to defend against the litigation over redistricting that is sure to follow the 2020 Census.

Ross had learned that the Commerce Department had discovered that its own 2012 estimate of 11 million illegals was wrong. How so? That estimate was based on responses to its American Community Survey (ACS), a more extensive questionnaire that replaced what formerly was the so-called "Long Form." This form is sent to a small fraction of the population.

Using other available federal records, the Census Bureau realized that the percentage of respondents falsely claiming to be citizens was significantly higher than the percentage used in 2012 to come up with the estimate of 11 million illegals.

The citizenship question is particularly appropriate in light of the large population of illegal aliens in the United States. Political power for each state rests on who is counted in the representative numbers. Gaining or losing numbers relative to other states means gaining or losing political power in the House of Representatives and the Electoral College.

There is a stupid way to estimate illegals that will give you VERY wrong numbers. And then there is a smart way to go about it that will give you best data.


Asking someone if they are an illegal - is a STUPID way of going about, as many people will then simply not fill out the survey (and that seems to be exacly what Ross wants).


A smart way to go about this is how it is currently ALREADY done:

Estimate of illegals is a difference between number of immigrants (those not born in United States) from Census survey minus number of legal immigrants we KNOW are in the country, because they are all officially registered.

Since the survey is used to apportion representatives, it is better for the American people if they don’t fill it out.

Deceit is not good for American people. It is WRONG to structure the survey with express goal of misrepresentation of population.


Constitution says pretty clearly that everyone counts:

Representatives shall be apportioned among the several States according to their respective numbers, counting the whole number of persons in each State, excluding Indians not taxed.

So what administration is trying to do seems to be un-constitutional.

Pew's methodology is flawed. Yale University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology released a study a few weeks ago that shows 22 million illegal aliens in the United States.

Anton, please be real for a second and explain why any country or its legal citizens would want noncitizens to vote? Can you understand the skepticism in how that would be good for a country or it's citizens?

As far as the questionnaire goes, I will agree asking the question might cause many not to answer the census at all. However, there are many lawful reasons why you could mark no to permanent resident / citizen status and not fear being arrested for immigration violations.

The absurdity of Anton's claim:

Municipalities like NYC (where I live), NYS, NJ, CA, etc not only encourage illegals to come to their regions, but protect them once they do by refusing to cooperate with ICE. These illegals have violated US Federal law.

So these places now have larger populations due to illegals. Anton would then like to reward these municipalities with additional federal tax $$. In essence, we'd be rewarding these regions with extra $$ entirely due to the fact that they have larger populations, which occurred only because they aided and abetted illegals who have no business being in the country in the first place.

That's a liberal's logic for you.

Texas will (again) gain seats after 2020. And not by counting illegals.

Among the reasons are:

1. Texas respects the rights of its citizens and governs the state such. Free people gravitate toward liberty.
2. Texas is business friendly. Numerous corporations have relocated headquarters or other important aspects of their businesses here.
3. Texas is a low tax state. Not the lowest, but among them. With coming property tax reform, we'll head toward the lowest.
4. Texas has J-O-B-S, jobs. Our economy is diversified and booming. Employers are actively recruiting employees with all levels of training, skills, and education.

Economic disaster, high tax hell-holes like Michigan, California, and Illinois will continue to lose residents to one of the largest economies in the WORLD.

Texas will continue to get "redder" and more influential in the future.

Don't piss us off. We can shut off your lights and heat long distance. We also have the largest standing military in the continental US (Fort Hood)... along with the majority of the nuclear stockpile not currently deployed and the people that build them.
