RightNation.US: All Time Greatest Rock Song About Immigration - RightNation.US

-----
It has been ten years since students at my school walked out to protest the enforcement of our immigration laws. Back then, Dodgerking wrote about his experience at his school a one town over:

Quote

Second period ends and break begins and this is where the fun starts to begin. The bell to end break and send students back to class rings. All of a sudden the entire campus starts chanting, “si se puede” and “viva Mexico” running towards the gates before the proctors could close them. Now we have chaos, for what? Most of the students participating in this uprising have no idea what the main issues are, have no idea why the other side supports this bill, have no idea why many oppose this bill, and have no idea about the true impact on them and their family if this bill does pass.

My own expereice that day was a little more personal:

Quote

Thanks to Dodgerking for blogging this. Although I was mildly put off by the whole thing--my largest class today was only 15 kids--I became too upset to share my thoughts on this when my wife called, during class. She was in a panic because the students had made their way down to our street and wouldn't let her back in after picking up our daughter from school. I had her call 911 and tell them to radio the cops who were just standing there letting it happen. Needless to say, I'm not going to be phoning my Senators asking them to vote "no."

Needless to say, I've long abandoned my deslusion that immigrants from Latin America are "natural conservatives":

Quote

The PAN isn't conservative in the sense that the GOP is, and the GOP isn't even all that conservative. But the PAN is irrelevant because there are two socialist parties that run the country. So why are we supposed to buy the notion that people coming from an almost entirely socialist country (the rest of the parties are even further to the left) are somehow "natural conservatives"? Because they value family? Uh, Communist China. Because they're Catholic? Uh, Liberation Theology. Because they're anti-abortion? Yeah, until they get to the United States and start attending public schools. On and on we go. None of it holds up to reality. Worse than all the self-delusion is the lying. We've had our elected leaders lie to us so much we almost need it to happen for stability's sake. But even if it seems that way, all the lying about border security and the effects of unchecked illegal immigration has eroded the very foundations of our system of government. It's much worse than what happened during prohibition, and everyone but a few Southern Baptist Sunday School teachers recognizes that prohibition created a disrespect for law and order. When laws are openly broken with the consent of elected leaders, there's no stopping the erosion. You don't get to pick and choose. If the laws are bad, change them. And I don't see too many on the anti-illegal immigration opposing a better system. They just oppose the lawless method of importing socialist worker bees through bait and switch tactics. The Democrats had better stop lying and the GOP had better stop deluding itself. Both parties are playing with fire.

So now we find ourselves with a president elect who won by taking the strongest (at times) position on immigration in the post war era. And it happened again:

Quote

The demonstration was one of many in Southern California Thursday morning and across the nation, protesting Trump’s election. Social media feeds used the hashtag #NotMyPresident and local students would yell the same, as well as “Dump Trump!” and “F--k Donald Trump!”

“While most students are protesting civilly, I have been informed that one student threw an orange at a Montclair police unit and some students have jumped onto the rear of an Ontario police truck,” Montclair police Chief Robert Avels said in an email.

What didn't make the news was all the students coming up to me and asking why people were freaking out so much now despite the fact that Obama has been deporting more immigrants than Bush or Clinton. In one of our many discussions, one of my brighter students observed that people don't care what you do, they just care about what you say. You couldn't ask for a better summation of the fact that we live in a post-truth environment. To be clear, our students do have real concerns due to the fact that Obama's DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) executive order collects ALL their personal information:

  • Proof of attending High School including diplomas, transcripts and a letter from the school
  • Medical records
  • Bank records
  • Tax records
  • Rental lease
  • Bills proving residence in the U.S. for the last five years – specifically between June 2007 and June 2012.
  • Birth certificate and passport to show proof of age

If they fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid, ICE will know exactly where to find them. Well, that's not Trump's fault. That's Obama's fault. If they weren't afraid under him while he was actually deporting people and collecting all this info, then absolutely nothing has changed. If Trump cancels DACA, then at least there'll be no more info gathered. They're better off.

Then there were the kids who were baffled by the freak out from LGBTQ students. A bunch of my students came to me and told me they couldn't understand how the gay kids could be upset with Trump's election since Trump is pro-gay marriage and had been waving the rainbow flag around days before. I just reminded them of what we've been talking about all semester: it's all just rhetoric now.

Anyway, as much as Ive written about immigration over the years, I haven't posted a music thread about it. So, here it is. No rules really. Not that you'd follow them. Think about that when you criticize people for not following our immigration laws!

DEVO was fond of saying we were in a Post Post Modern world, sadly I'd add at least another "Post" to that. Post Normal, Post Modern, whatever, it's heralded a decline in society and most people's ability to think rationally at all, which I suspect was the point of the educational "system" for a while now. The "Narrative" is more important than facts, "Trvth" is more important than truth, etc.

As for the students who signed up for DACA and are now crapping bricks about the govt having all their info...well, coming from someone older, that'll teach you to trust the Government, any Government. Derp.

This song is about Puerto Ricans moving to NYC, so it doesn't exactly fit the category, but close enough.

You're right. I think I had the word "Immigration" on my mind. For some reason.

World's Shortest Movie Reviews
American Sniper: Bradly Cooper=Best Actor
The Arroyo: Had a Pureflix feel to the acting, but well shot. Great conservative movie.
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies: As usual, the third installment is the best--having an ending really helped.
The Maze Runner: The perfect metaphor for moving to Detroit.
Dumb and Dumber To: More jokes. Cruder jokes. Someone gets hooked on crack.
Snowpiercer: Joe Biden's idea of heaven. Everyone on the Earth living on a train. Captain America admits he was going to eat Billy Elliot.
Hunger Games: Catching Fire: This is what the world would look like without college football.
Interstellar 2001:A Space Odyssey with a soul. You will get very thirsty, so hydrate before viewing.
When the Game Stands Tall Proves my theory that it's worse when you win.
Guardians of the Galaxy Make a fun adventure movie about space and make a ton of money. Who knew? I mean, besides that Lucas guy.
Blended I don't get the "Billy Madison is genius, Blended is crap" review. It's as good as any other Sandler movie.
Mom's Night Out Hilarious. You will laugh unless you drive a black BMW and watch sunsets at the golf course.
The Amazing Spiderman 2 This series is still better than the Toby McGuire one. I actually cared if Gwen Stacy died.
Odd Thomas I understand the critics who didn't like the uneven tone. Way uneven. Still worth watching on Netflix.
Star Trek Into DarknessGood movie. Please, for the love of tribbles, let old Spock die.
Grown Ups 2 Critics, attack. Whatever you want to say about this one, I'm okay with it.
Thor: The Dark World Still very, very good. But I'd like an entire Thor movie set just in Asgard.
