Sinister Prankster Hacks Nest Camera, Threatens To Kidnap Baby

New York Post

Excerpt:

A California father said this week that a hacker infiltrated his Nest camera, commandeered the voice function and threatened to steal his baby — the latest in a string of disturbing security breaches of the devices.

Jack Newcombe wrote in the East Bay Times that a woman’s voice was broadcast from the camera when he and his wife were at work and their 18-month-old child was home with their nanny.

“The voice is laughing when it chimes in. She says we have a nice house and encourages the nanny to respond. She does not,” Newcombe wrote in the story.

Then, he said, the harmless hack took a disturbing turn.

“The voice starts to get agitated at the nanny’s lack of response and then snaps, in a very threatening voice: ‘I’m coming for the baby if you don’t answer me, bitch!’” he wrote.

Newcombe’s experience is not unique, he noted in the story.

Never buy/use any security equipment that's wifi based.

All of mine is 100% hardwired for a good reason.
