Al Gore: "We're Running Out of Time" On Global Warming

Former Vice President Al Gore warned the world was "running out of time" to stop catastrophic global warming in a statement published after the United Nations released its special climate report Sunday night. "Today the world's leading scientific experts collectively reinforced what Mother Nature has made clear that we need to undergo an urgent and rapid transformation to a global clean energy economy," Gore said in a statement.

"However, time is running out, so we must capitalize and build upon the solutions available today. Solving the climate crisis requires vision and leadership," Gore said before attacking President Donald Trump.

The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released a special report on keeping future warming in line with the stretch goal of the Paris climate accord. The report is meant to send a dire warning ahead of a UN climate summit in December. To keep future warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius, the IPCC said greenhouse gas emissions must fall 45 percent below 2010 levels by 2030. Emissions must decrease 100 percent by 2050, according to the report. The world would have to largely abandon its use of coal for electricity and use more solar and wind power, the IPCC said. However, the IPCC noted the costs of such a transition would be high, and options could include a carbon tax as high as $27,000 per ton by 2100. The IPCC's report also admitted that many types of extreme weather, including tropical cyclones and droughts, aren't being made more frequent or intense by global warming.

Gore used the UN's dire warning to go after Trump, casting his administration as stooges of the fossil fuel industry. Gore has previously said Trump should "resign" because of his unwillingness to fight global warming. "Unfortunately, the Trump administration has become a rogue outlier in its shortsighted attempt to prop up the dirty fossil fuel industries of the past," Gore said in a statement. "The administration is in direct conflict with American businesses, states, cities, and citizens leading the transformation."

So how much money does he want this time? <_<

It's The Final Chance We Have To Stop Global Warming ... Until The Next Chance

As the United Nations prepares to issue a dire warning about future global warming and hold summits on the matter, activists are already warning that time is running out to stop catastrophic climate change. For example, The Guardian newspaper warned on Friday the "next three months are crucial for the future of the planet" and that the U.N.'s "[t]wo forthcoming major climate talks offer governments an opportunity to respond to this year's extreme weather with decisive action." It's only the latest warning from climate activists about the supposed importance of upcoming U.N. meetings stemming future temperature rise. Environmental economist Richard Tol quipped that "[i]f we miss this final chance, there will be another final chance in a little while."

Tol's remarks inspired The Daily Caller News Foundation to reprise its list of warnings from politicians and activists that time was running out to avoid catastrophic global warming. Enjoy.

1. Was 2015 The 'Last Effective Opportunity' To Stop Catastrophe?

World leaders meeting at the Vatican last week issued a statement saying that 2015 was the "last effective opportunity to negotiate arrangements that keep human-induced warming below 2-degrees [Celsius]." Pope Francis wants to weigh in on global warming, and is expected to issue an encyclical saying basically the same thing. The head of the Catholic Church will likely reiterate that 2015 is the last chance to stop massive warming. However, the U.N. said basically the same thing about 2014's climate summit.

2. French Official Warned We Only Had '500 Days' To Stop 'Climate Chaos'

When French politician Laurent Fabius met with former Secretary of State John Kerry on May 13, 2014 to talk about world issues, he said, "We have 500 days to avoid climate chaos." Ironically, at the time of Fabius' comments, the U.N. had scheduled a climate summit to meet in Paris in December 2015 some 565 days after his remarks. Looks like the U.N. is 65 days too late to save the world.

3. Obama Was Apparently Our Last Chance

When former President Barack Obama promised to "slow the rise of the oceans" some environmentalists may have taken him quite literally. The United Nations Foundation President Tim Wirth told Climatewire in 2012 that Obama's second term was "the last window of opportunity" to impose policies to restrict fossil fuel use. Wirth said it's "the last chance we have to get anything approaching 2 degrees Centigrade," adding that if "we don't do it now, we are committing the world to a drastically different place."

4. Hours, Yes Hours, To Stop Global Warming

In 2009, world leaders met in Copenhagen, Denmark, to potentially hash out another climate treaty. That same year, the head of Canada's Green Party wrote that there was only "hours" left to stop global warming. "We have hours to act to avert a slow-motion tsunami that could destroy civilization as we know it," Elizabeth May, leader of the Greens in Canada, wrote in 2009. "Earth has a long time. Humanity does not. We need to act urgently. We no longer have decades; we have hours. We mark that in Earth Hour on Saturday."

5. 50 Days Left To Save The Earth?

Yeah, I could've sworn we were already out of time and crossed the dreaded "Tipping Point" years ago. I just want to know what the hold up is on colonizing Mars since the Earth is doomed.

If only that would mean time is also running out on our having to put up with all their warnings about it, but that racket will go on forever.

Which tipping point are you referring to? There have been so many predicted, I can't keep them all straight.

Of course it will go on forever. Right up until they find a new reason why the sky is falling down around our ankles. It's liberal saber rattling, AGAIN. When I was a kid, pollution was going to blot out the sun by 1984, overpopulation was going to push people off the edge of the
flat world and those who remained were all going to be living on Soylent Green or Orange and the Ross Ice Shelf had disappeared before our very eyes and "No Blade of Grass" was what we had to look forward to next. And Pez was the currency of the future. So much for liberal optimism. They do so love their Dystopia. Dare we hope their rage spontaneously combusts them into ashes anytime soon?
