"American Pie" singer Don McLean is slamming UCLA after the university quickly rescinded a lifetime achievement award they offered to him because of his past domestic violence arrest.

Big Don McLean fan here. We used to do "American Pie" in the band, and I still occasionally play "Vincent" (i.e. "Starry Starry Night") as a solo act.

And while I don't pretend to know the details about his squabbles with his ex-wife, I do agree those UCLA students are morons.

I can't remember how many times I listen to that song when it came out. The melody and encrypted wording made that summer!

And yet, on campus, Che Guevara, that racist, homophobic, individual was honored on April 8, 2019, when a University of California-Los Angeles professor emeritus gave a presentation in which he compared Che Guevara to Jesus Christ.

As California transitions into a Latino majority state, will UCLA have to lower its standards to accommodate all those affirmative action Latinos wanting to go to school there?

For what it's worth Weird Al's version is quite funny as well.

Fan here too, but probably not as big a fan as you as.

Three #1 hits in 5 years? (American Pie '71, Starry Night '72, Wonderful Baby '75) Yeah, I like those songs as much as anyone, but should that really count for "LIFETIME Achievement"? Don't most organizations that give out awards like this want to see something spanning multiple decades?

For Example, At American Film Institute (AFI)(I'm a member), the 2019 Lifetime Achievement went to Denzel Washington who has had major industry awards/nominations and/or major hit films in EACH of the last four decades. (Oscar for Best Supporting actor, Glory, 1989; Oscar for Best Actor, Training Day 2001; Oscar nominations in '88,'93,'00,'13,'17,'18; Golden Globe in '90, '00, '16 with nominations in '88, '93, '02, '08, '13, '17; And a Tony Award in 2010 for Beast Actor in A Play, "Fences".

Now THAT'S what I call "Lifetime Achievement".

Denzel Washington to Receive 2019 AFI Life Achievement Award. Award will be presented on June 6, 2019

McLean's Domestic violence? *If* I believe the media reports, THAT allegedly had been going on for years/decades, culminating in the arrest and divorce in 2016. The former wife alleges it had been going on "since the early days of our marriage" and they were married in '87.

(Why do some women put up with that sort of thing for that long? Beats the hell out of me. So to speak. But it's no secret that some do put up with it for years/decades. )

EtA: Billboard (2016) Don McLean's Wife Cites Years of Abuse Leading Up to Arrest "Don McLean's wife was granted a temporary order of protection from the "American Pie" singer after she cited a pattern of abuse going back three decades."

I don't believe it was ever released as a "single", so you probably never heard it on the radio, but it was on the soundtrack to the film The Next Best Thing (2000) which was itself largely forgettable.

This was at the height of her techno-pop/synth-pop/whatever-you-call-it phase and, oh lord, it was terrible.

Don McLean has livid comfortably off of that one song....And rightfully so...Itís a great song

I remember when it first came out...It was the time of 2 minute songs that the radio stations loved...And here come American Pie at about 8 minutes long

I had to listen to "The Band's" version about 50 times to get it out of my head.

(Still, my favorite is Chest Fever. Not the 3 Dog Night one.)

I'm guessing if somebody had ever seen all those Star Wars movies they might understand all the jokes better than I did.
