Upon learning that federal officials have solicited help from Titanic and Avatar director James Cameron to brainstorm solutions for the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, I was reminded of the closing track from William Shatner’s under-appreciated 2004 spoken word album Has Been.
It is unfortunate Cameron does not share Shatner’s apparent humility. Neither does Scarlett Johansson or Ryan Reynolds.
Quote
I have saved the world in the movies
So naturally there’s folks who think I must know what to know
But just because you’ve seen me on your TV
Doesn’t mean I’m any more enlightened than you
And while there’s a part of me
In that guy you’ve seen
Up there on that screen
I am so much more
And I wish I knew the things you think I do
I would change this world for sure
But I eat and sleep and breathe and bleed and feel
Sorry to disappoint you
But I’m real
I’d love to help the world and all its problems
But I’m an entertainer, and that’s all
So the next time there’s an asteroid or a natural disaster
I’m flattered that you thought of me
But I’m not the one to call
So naturally there’s folks who think I must know what to know

Unfortunately, the work that celebrities engage in is not for real. Johansson is little more than an "A-list" rubbernecker like her buddy Obama -- a celebrity disaster area tourist more concerned with appearing concerned. (I will not include Kevin Costner in this argument because he is an investor in an endeavor -- ultimately successful or not -- to clean up the oil, nor will I include anyone else who actually steps forward to lend some sort of real assistance.)
My first thought was, "That's all those poor people need, is for Martin or Charlie to show up and start mouthing off."
