Representative from Washington

The President of the United States is a Liar
Standing on the steps of the U.S. Capitol McDermott alleged, in a soundbite shown on the September 19 NBC Nightly News:
Quote
“The President of the United States will lie to the American people in order to get us into this war.”

On ABC’s This Week, Stephanopoulos asked McDermott, who was in Baghdad: “Do you really believe that?” McDermott confirmed:
Quote
“I believe that sometimes they give out misinformation. Lyndon Johnson did it in the Vietnam War. Both David and I were in that war and there was no Gulf of Tonkin incident. The President lied to Congress about how many people he was going to put into Vietnam or whether in Laos or whether in Cambodia. It would not surprise me if they came with some information that is not provable and they shifted. First they said it was al-Qaeda, then they said it was weapons of mass destruction. Now they’re going back and saying it’s al-Qaeda again. When will that stop? Why don’t they let the inspectors come so that we can disarm Saddam Hussein. Both David and I want to disarm him. That’s gotta be very clear. He’s not a very good guy.” Stephanopoulos pressed: “But do you have any evidence the President has lied?” McDermott repeated: “I think the President would mislead the American people.”

Accuses Bush of Plotting to be Emperor
Criticized for saying on a trip to Iraq that Bush would mislead the American public, McDermott was back in his district telling cheering supporters that Bush is planning a war to distract voters' attention from domestic problems.
He said Bush is trying to "submarine" efforts to restart weapons inspections in Iraq to give him a pretext for starting a war — a war McDermott said is being planned in part to bolster U.S. oil interests.
Quote
"And what we are dealing with right now in this country is whether we are having a kind of bloodless, silent coup or not,"
"This president is trying to bring to himself all the power to become an emperor — to create Empire America," he said.
And he warned his supporters, "If you go along like sheep that is what will happen."

Country Continuously Terrorized by the Government
Quote
"One of the dilemmas we've had since 9/11 is that this country has been continuously terrorized by the government. Every week they announce a new threat. 'Today is a code orange.' 'Today is a code red.'
"Granted it was an awful day. It was a heinous act. Nobody has anything but horror over what happened that day.
"But the message to draw from that day is not that we should suddenly go to war with the whole world, which is what the president is saying."

McDermott is convinced that Bush is bent on war with Iraq to distract voters' attention from a collapsing stock market and other problems at home.
Quote
"It is the oldest game in the book. They found this war very convenient to obscure people's views about what is happening domestically."

Rep. Jim McDermott, so memorably featured from Baghdad attacking President Bush as a liar last fall on ABC’s This Week, accepted $5,000 for his legal defense fund from Shakir al-Khafaji, a Saddam supporter (and contractor with the Ba’athist regime) who arranged his Baghdad trip.

McDermott Urging Dems: Time WMD Probe for 2004 Election
When it comes to those elusive weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, congressional Democrats speak publicly in oh-so-grave tones about the urgent need to find out whether President Bush based his decision to go to war on distorted intelligence - or even lied to the nation outright.
But at least one congressional Bush basher has let the cat out of the bag, virtually admitting that any WMD scandal would be more about politics than national security.
Jim McDermott is now urging his colleagues to keep their investigative powder dry until the 2004 presidential campaign, when any scandal could be timed for maximum political impact.
Quote
"The election is 18 months away," McDermott told The Hill newspaper on Wednesday. "We don’t want this to go away just yet. There’s plenty of time."

U.S. military could have found Saddam "a long time ago if they wanted"
The Washington congressman who criticized President Bush while visiting Baghdad last year has questioned the timing of the capture of deposed Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.
Quote
Rep. Jim McDermott (search), D-Wash., told a Seattle radio station Monday the U.S. military could have found Saddam "a long time ago if they wanted." Asked if he thought the weekend capture was timed to help Bush, McDermott chuckled and said: "Yeah. Oh, yeah."
The Democratic congressman went on to say, "There's too much by happenstance for it to be just a coincidental thing."
When interviewer Dave Ross asked again if he meant to imply the Bush administration timed the capture for political reasons, McDermott said: "I don't know that it was definitely planned on this weekend, but I know they've been in contact with people all along who knew basically where he was. It was just a matter of time till they'd find him.
"It's funny," McDermott added, "when they're having all this trouble, suddenly they have to roll out something."
