I suppose in theory I might be called a Democrat because I believe our modern world is best governed by a federal government, but I always have and will continue to associate myself with the Republican party and will (most of the time) vote for Republicans because of some rudimentary beliefs in Captialism, fiscal conservatism, gun rights, and the fact that I'd rather see an egregious criminal killed than a baby.

Quite simply, my 2008 platform would be:

* Iraq Troops - Drastically reduce the amount of military support based in Iraq. I would cut troop levels about 85% within 6-8 months.

* Subprime Mortgage Crisis - I would leave the mortgage crunch crisis to the banking industry to sort out. This is not the government's place to meddle.

* Health Care Costs - Assemble a team of well-informed, bipartisan experts to advise on the best way to solve the cost of rising health care.

* Social Security - Push congress to put together a plan of privatization. Retirement accounts would be managed by private firms, but regulated by the government, very similar to how student loans work.

* Immigration - I would work to make the immigration process much easier, yet enforce the law.

* Abortion - Ultimately, the president can not do anything about abortion, other than urge congress to repeal Roe v. Wade, and appoint supreme court justices who oppose abortion. Both things which I would do.

* Gay rights/Gay marriage - I support gay rights and gay marriage.

* Iraq war inquiries - While eventually immunity would probably be granted to Bush and his administration absolving them of any crimes relating to Iraq, I would first put together a bipartisan commission of my own with two distinct purposes: 1. Investigate the legitamacy of the 9/11 commission, and 2. Investigate the evidence leading up to the Iraq war and advise me on a course of action regarding prosecution of members of the Bush administration. It's a delicate balance. On one hand you can't have presidents going to war based on the existence of mobile biological weapon labs that simply don't exist, but on the other hand you can't have future presidents apprehensive about going to war for fear of eventual prosecution.

Your position on abortion would be a deal-breaker for me. Your proposal to investigate members of the Bush Administration over their conduct of the Iraq War has merit, but it would have to be a genuinely independent investigation. Otherwise it would have little credibility and would distract your Administration from the more pressing work of addressing today's challenges. Climate change is a big omission from your platform. Otherwise, a sensible set of proposals.

I'm at peace with the fact that I'd have an extremely small following. biggrin.gif

Oh yeah, climate change. About the only position I would take is that I would absolutely not support anything like Kyoto that would impede free enterprise in the states. I realize this could further hurt our "global image" so I suppose we'd have to be activist as a government in holding domestic companies liable for damage to the environment if for no other reason than for PR.
