Five crates of 100 year-old whisky dug out of antartic ice
The Scotsman on February 6, 2010 by Stephen McGinty <Excerpt> FOR those who like their dram chilled, it's perfect. A whisky that sustained explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton's ill-fated expedition to the South Pole a century ago has been drilled out of the Antarctic ice. • Cases of vintage Mackinlays whiskt have been found buried at explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton base at Cape Royds Antarctica Five crates buried under ice have been recovered by a heritage team restoring the explorer's hut. Al Fastier, the New Zealand Antarctic Heritage Trust team leader, yesterday said he believes some bottles are still intact. The whisky was made by McKinlay and Co, and drinks group Whyte & Mackay has asked for a sample to carry out tests with a view to re-launching the brand. Although ice cracked some of the bottles, which had been left there in 1909, the restorers said they are confident the five crates contain intact bottles "given liquid can be heard when the crates are moved". Mr Fastier said the team thought there were two whisky and brandy crates and were amazed to find five. Restoration workers found the crates under the hut's floorboards in 2006, but they were too deeply embedded in ice to be dislodged. The New Zealanders agreed to drill the ice to try to retrieve some bottles, although the rest must stay under conservation guidelines agreed to by 12 Antarctic Treaty nations. <Snip> Article |

I'll drink to that! (IMG:http://www.rightnation.us/forums/style_emoticons/default/yeahthat.gif) but with all the global warming, they should of waited a couple of years and would not of had to drill, obviously not from the USA as we do not drill for anything here. I would of toasted a glass with al gore if that happened (IMG:http://www.rightnation.us/forums/style_emoticons/default/Sarcasm.gif) some wonders never cease. The Shackleton story is one of the greatest stories I've ever heard. It was about the courage, bravery, honor and commitment of exploration and never giving up against the most daunting odds in order to save your fellow man. Liberals would puke. There was an excellent 2 hour show on PBS's Nova about two hours long that went into great detail about the voyage and it was one of the most captivating shows I've ever watched on TV. If it comes on again, don't miss it.

If it comes on again, don't miss it. I saw the PBS documentary and agree it was one of the best. The hardships these men endured for so long are unimaginable and the faith and commitment they had in their leader, Sir Ernest Shackelton, to pull them through, was extraordinary. I own the movie with Kenneth Branaugh (sp?). It is an excellent interpretation of the expedition of these brave explorers. It conveyed what it must have been like for these men to have been stranded alone in the Antarctic, with no realistic hope for rescue or survival. This was in 1915 and "normal" ships just didn't venture to the Antarctic. One of the most moving and saddest scenes is when their beloved ship, The Endurance, is crushed by the relentlessly moving ice and then, in her death throes, with all the accompanying creaks and groans of the dying ship, sinks to the depths of the Weddell Sea. (IMG:http://www.rightnation.us/forums/style_emoticons/default/1346.gif) To see that must have been like the final nail in their coffin, as if they were all hopelessly and finally, doomed to a cold, lonely death. If not for Shackelton's courage, determination, perseverance, love for his men and his honor, that may well have been the end of all of them. PROOFREAD, PROOFREAD, PROOFREAD, I'm sure my eight grade english teacher Mrs. Staffend would have said. But I never heard a word she said. She was a six foot three scandanavian white haired voluptuous bombsheel and I was 13 going through puberty. At that age, you're pretty much just an erection with feet. I don't really remember anything she ever said, I just remember a loud buzzing in my ears whenever I looked at her. She was so hot, she could make god watch porn. |

An interesting piece of knowledge about Shackelton, is he was originally on Captain Scott's first venture into the Antartic. He was sent home due to sickness.

Any guy who likes his whisky, is a guy worth talking to. In all seriousness... (and then some)... I bet you know how to make some serious toasts. Like never mind "saying grace" for a meal... I think you, my friend, know how to raise a serious cheer. (IMG:http://www.rightnation.us/forums/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) |
