Police announced Sunday they have found the skeletal remains of Amber Dubois, the 14-year-old Escondido High School freshman who was last seen walking to school on Feb. 13, 2009.

Escondido Police Chief Jim Maher said the remains were found early Saturday in a rugged area north of the Pala Indian Reservation and that a murder investigation is under way.

"I certainly had hoped that when the day came to do a press conference about Amber it would be under much different circumstances, but that was not to be," Maher said.

Positive identification through dental records was made by the county Medical Examiner's office, Maher said, and Amber's parents, Maurice Dubois and Carrie McGonigle, were notified Saturday evening.

The heart-wrenching news came exactly one week after registered sex offender John Albert Gardner III was arrested for suspicion of rape and murder in the Feb. 25 slaying of 17-year-old Chelsea King of Poway.

Gardner reportedly lived in Escondido from January 2008 to January 2010. Police said they contacted him eight times during that span and began a fresh look at him and any possible ties to Amber.

Authorities refused to say if Gardner is being linked to Amber's slaying. The 30-year-old Gardner pleaded not guilty Wednesday to the charges in the King case.

"I'm extremely sad," Amber's grandmother, Sheila Welch, said when contacted by telephone at her Los Angeles area home. "I don't think that thoughts really describe what happens when you find out someone you love so much was murdered."

Maher told a packed news conference that authorities were following a lead when they discovered the remains. Maher refused to say what the lead was that led them to Amber's body or to provide details about the site where the skeleton was found.

Maurice Dubois made a brief statement thanking the hundreds of volunteers who have helped search for his daughter the last 13 months. Her mother did not speak.

San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore said another news conference would take place on Monday and further details would be released at that time.

Some articles are saying it was near Pala that she was found by a hiker but that may be inaccurate. According to my friend, the skeletal remains were near the pond authorities were draining that is across the shore of Lake Hodges where Chelsea King was found.

It is so very sad. Even though she has been found I can't imagine how closure for something like this ever comes. The rage and pain has got to be overwhelming. I will pray for the family.

I read somewhere that sex offenders canNOT be rehabilitated --- that whatever demon causes these people to commit these unspeakable acts can NEVER be exorcised. If that is true, then they should never be released once caught.

Until the time comes where society can somehow alter the DNA of the people they need to be removed from the gene pool so that there is absolutely no chance of them passing on their defective behavior to others. Libtard "humanitarians would say that we should keep them alive, isolate, and "study" them. What's to study? We already know they can never be trusted to live normal lives amongst the rest of us.

Besides the 13yr old he attacked that put him in jail in 2000 and the jogger he tried to nab at the end of December 2009, there are reports of attacks in nearby Riverside County with sketches of the attackers looking very much like him.

May be true, as long as you mean what normal people mean by "major sex offender". Actual rapists and child molesters who should be executed or locked up for life.

As opposed to what the college women's studies class members define it as, which is, as far as I can tell, any man doing anything that makes any woman at all uncomfortable, whether he knows it or not.

And as opposed to minor sex offenders. Like an acquaintance of mine from high school who as a stupid college freshman, grabbed a woman's breast, uninvited. He was wrong. He was reported, caught, and punished, as it should be. And now he's on the state's sex offender list for the rest of his life. But I do think he got the message "hey, don't do that again." I don't think we help society or make it safer by taking temporarily stupid people and locking them up for life.

I think there might be more victims that can't talk. It's sad to say, and a rather unthinkable premise, but his pattern suggests that there may be more bodies out there. If he was willing to do this to these two young girls, he didn't stop with them. Especially with the other multiple attempts he has made. He is a serial rapist/killer.
