Man marries pillow
Metro UK

True love can take many forms. In this case, it has taken the form of a Korean man falling in love with, and eventually marrying, a large pillow with a picture of a woman on it.

Lee Jin-gyu fell for his 'dakimakura' - a kind of large, huggable pillow from Japan, often with a picture of a popular anime character printed on the side.

In Lee's case, his beloved pillow has an image of Fate Testarossa, from the 'magical girl' anime series Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha.

Now the 28-year-old otaku (a Japanese term that roughly translates to somewhere between 'obsessive' and 'nerd') has wed the pillow in a special ceremony, after fitting it out with a wedding dress for the service in front of a local priest. Their nuptials were eagerly chronicled by the local media.

'He is completely obsessed with this pillow and takes it everywhere,' said one friend.

'They go out to the park or the funfair where it will go on all the rides with him. Then when he goes out to eat he takes it with him and it gets its own seat and its own meal,' they added.

Nothing Koreans do surprises me anymore. They are the most Confucian of all the Asian cultures. Sometimes I am convinced that Roddenberry based his Vulcan culture on Korea. I work and have a fairly close relationship with several teachers here. We go out occasionally for drinks or a dinner, we listen to music, and we sit and drink coffee and talk. But in Korean, I can't call them my friend because we are not the same age. However someone who is the same age and who they hate, is their friend.

A ceremony to express one's commitment to an inanimate object is illogical, Danny.

Yup, but as long as you say "Friend" in English, it is okay.

I think it is kimchi.

That stuff does horrible things to people.

Well, if it means he has visitation rights when the pillow is in hospital, then I guess it's okay.

And of course, having no problems with the mother-in-law is a big bonus.

I have lived in Korea for about 7 years, speak Korean and my ex is Korean. In addition, I have travelled there over 100 times and do business there monthly. That being said, this is weird, even for them. Danny is right on, though...they are a difficult people to peel back their culture to get to the real person. Problem is, their culture IS the real person.

So, on a scale of one to ten, 1 being a balanced heterosexual marriage and 10 being that freak who decided she was married to the Berlin Wall, where does this guy fall?

Sorry, I think you're scale is a little skewed. How about one being a marriage between two consenting adults, instead? Especially since the idea of a balanced normal marriage is pretty speculative as it is. In this case, I would list the guy as say negative 4.
