If the discusion had been on the Revolutionary war in general you would be right to bring it up. What France has to do with George Washington the leader is a mystery to me. Franklin was the person involved with getting French support, not Washington.

No problem. If I have given the impression that I was having a dig at America or American history, I apologise. All I ever do is argue history. If some people here wish to interpret that as bashing America, then that is their interpretation. Its completely the wrong one, but I cant tell people what to think.

BTW, James Kirk imo is like me: friendly but occasionally critical (whilst still being cordial I hope). DJM is more abrasive than us, but actually likes America overall I think, albeit with reservations. The only foreign poster who imo revels in antagonising people here is our Aussie 'friend'.

As to this thread, have you actually read it?. I was/am being accused of bashing America for the crime of agreeing with another poster that France played an important and crucial role 1776-1783.

Agreeing with a correct historical point made by another poster.

actually the French didnt really get involved until France recognized the fledgling country in 1778 once the colonies had won a few battles. In 1880 (4 years after the declaration) they supplied 5 batallons of infrantry and artillery. This army merged with the Continental army and pinned Cornwalliis in Yorktown. Then the Frnch navy (which was late because they had been dueling with England over the carribean islands) blockaded Cornwallis from the relief ships and he ultimaely surrendered, Could he US won with out the troops? maybe. The real capstone was the French navy since the colonies didnt have a full on navy at this point to duel with the Brit navy. Basically were the Frenc an asset? yes but to make it sound like without it the colonies would have lost is unsupported
