So why did Flynn lie?

Article:

Much has been made of why Special Counsel Robert Mueller prosecuted former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn who lied to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. But what about the lie itself, which President Trump has noted on Twitter was a pretty useless lie?

Quote

I had to fire General Flynn because he lied to the Vice President and the FBI. He has pled guilty to those lies. It is a shame because his actions during the transition were lawful. There was nothing to hide!

The conventional wisdom, as UCLA law professor Harry Litman lays out, is that Flynn "knew" that talking with the Russians, or rather, "negotiating" with them as he extends the term, was "wrong and inimical to U.S. interests." I notice he doesn't use the word "illegal" and from a law professor that's significant. Just wrong.

I think Flynn lied because he was afraid. And he was afraid because he's a Washington swamp creature, even if a Trump-friendly one.

In the Washington swamp culture, nothing is worse than talking to a Russian.

Russia is our worst enemy, supposedly, and great amounts of spydom and security clearances hinge on keeping Russia as big an enemy as possible. More enemy, more government funds for the bureaucracies that hunt Russian spies. And more specifically, talk to a Russian, lose your security clearance. It no longer matters if you have had five wives and ten mistresses, smoked a ton of pot, have a minor criminal record, live with your girlfriend, practice devil worship, or have mental health issues. As we have seen in recent years, pretty much anyone can get a security clearance these days, nothing personal will exclude you, no matter how risky. Ed Snowden shacking up with his pole-dancing girlfriend out in Hawaii is Exhibit A. That leaves just mere contact with the Russians as the main taboo since something has to be taboo, or why else does anyone need a security clearance?

A bigger question now is WHY IS TRUMP STILL LYING BIG LEAGUE ABOUT FLYNN?

He tweets this:

https://media3.s-nbcnews.com/j/msnbc/components/video/201712/nn_pwi_russia_investigation_flynn_171202_1920x1080.nbcnews-ux-1080-600.jpg

So now he looks like a total idiot/obstructionist for saying he knew of lying to FBI when he went to Comey very next day after firing Flynn to ask him to drop Flynn's case. After firing Comey, Trump even openly mused that it was a mistake to fire Flynn.

Whats a liar to do? Lie some more of course:

President Donald Trump's personal lawyer took responsibility Sunday for a tweet that Trump sent the previous day, in which the president said for the first time that he knew his former security adviser, Michael Flynn, had lied to the FBI before he fired Flynn in February.

Which mental hospital will all of you Antons be in when this witch hunt results in nothing but a perjury charge against Flynn?

You have to admit, the President is either a Twitter genius at baiting them in..........or a dolt whose twitter feed will be his downfall.

It's not necessarily an "either/or". BOTH could end up being true.

Trump is absolutely right in what he said.... BUT, especially in the course of an active investigation, and DOUBLE ESPECIALLY an investigation in which the opposition is willing to parse every word, diagram every sentence, torture each turn of phrase until it confesses to what they want to hear, Trump needs to be EXCRUCIATINGLY careful in HOW he says it.

EtA" As to "Why did Flynn lie"? My guess is that he knew that while his actions weren't illegal it might look bad, and there'd be "no harm - no foul" in lieing about something that had no underlying crime. And if he'd have done exactly the same thing for a Dem candidate or president-elect, we would even be here discussing it.

Mueller wouldn't charge something so minor if Flynn wasn't proffering something major.

Based on what he saw, heard, and learned in the twelve months he spent at Trump's side between February of 2016 and February of 2017.

If there was anything even minor on Trump, we'd already know about it, and impeachment procedures would already be getting warmed up in the media.

That assumes Robert Mueller's office would leak.

Clearly, it doesn't.

He choked. Never talk to the FBI without your attorney present. He was also set up, we now know the lead FBI investigator was a corrupt agent.

This makes more sense than anything posted by Anton or Coggy. The FBI wasn't going to prosecute him previously, this was Mueller's idea. And Mueller's team has already lost one of it's players for displaying symptoms of TDS.

It's not a matter of leaks. They wouldn't let Trump be in charge for a year, going into year two, with no end in sight, if they had something.

That's a fact.

Exactly There are two types of prosecutors and investigators, whose who seek only the truth and those who seek to enrich their career.
The latter goes where the facts take them, the former goes where ever it's best for their career. Plus, in many circles if things don't net a court cases(preferably a convictions) then your not doing your job.
