Baffling interpreter appears at news update about serial killer

That's a bad sign.

Law enforcement officials delivered breaking news last week on the status of a serial killer in Tampa, Fla., but the deaf or hearing impaired were reportedly unable to follow along thanks to a bumbling interpreter.

The Tampa Police Department's Nov. 28 news conference, shown on TV and social media, announced the apprehension of the serial killer behind four deaths in the Seminole Heights neighborhood only to have that message turned into utter nonsense for those trying to follow what Derlyn Roberts was signing.

"Fifty-one hours ago, zero 12 22 (indecipherable) murder three minutes in 14 weeks ago in old (indecipherable) murder four five 55,000 plea 10 arrest murder bush (indecipherable) three age 24," said Tampa Police Chief Brian Dugan, according to the sign language from Roberts.

"She sat up there and waved her arms like she was singing 'Jingle Bells,'" Rachelle Settambrino told the Tampa Bay Times.

Settambrino is deaf and teaches American Sign Language at the University of South Florida.

The incident comes just two months after another Florida press conference went completely off the rails for the hearing impaired when officials were attempting to spread vital pre-Hurricane Irma information to residents of Manatee County.

Instead, the interpreter told viewers "pizza want you are" and that they "need be bear monster."

Maybe they should get Garret Morris.

What is baffling is what professionals in the legal business have done to our entire system of justice. Mau Mau law comes to mind.

They're deaf, not blind.

I'm paging through my Funk & Wagnalls "Inventory of Protected Groups", and find that "Spastic Sign Interpreter" among the list.
