Couple Spent $400,000 GoFundMe For Homeless Veteran Johnny Bobbitt Jr., Money All Gone

Last year, a couple made headlines for their good deed by raising $400,000 via GoFundMe to help a homeless veteran named Johnny Bobbitt Jr. Today, Gizmodo reports that after a prolonged legal battle, Bobbitt's attorney said the couple has spent the money and that there is nothing left.

As previously reported by the Inquisitr, the couple, Katie McClure and Mark D'Amico, first crossed paths with Bobbitt in late 2017, after he gave his last $20 to McClure for gas when she was stranded at night on the side of I-95 in Philadelphia.

McClure and D'Amico were moved by Bobbitt's generosity, and set up a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds to help Bobbitt off the streets. However, things took a bad turn when the couple refused to give Bobbitt the funds, reportedly because they were afraid he would spend the money on drugs. NPR reports that D'Amico previously stated, "I don't want him to do anything stupid. He's a drug addict. That's like me handing him a loaded gun. He has to do what he has to do to get his life together."

A year after the crowdfunding campaign, the dispute made its way to court. Bobbitt says that he received about $75,000 total, including a camper that the couple bought for him that he was eventually evicted from on their friend's property. Bobbitt feared that the campaign money was used to fund extravagant purchases by the couple, including vacations and gambling trips.

In August, a judge ordered the couple to hand over the remaining funds from the campaign.

Gizmodo reports that Bobbitt's attorney, Chris Fallon, has confirmed in a statement that the worst has happened, and the couple spent all of the funds. The couple initially stated that they kept the funds safe, but they now have until September 10 to complete a report detailing how the funds were spent. Some of the alleged expenses include the purchase of a new BMW and expensive vacations to California, Florida, and Las Vegas.

NJ.com reports that Bobbitt is "devastated," according to Fallon. "There is no money left. Where the money went, I have no idea."

According to USA Today, GoFundMe spokesman Bobby Whithorne said the crowdfunding platform is working with law enforcement on Bobbitt's behalf, in addition to "working with Johnny's legal team to ensure he's receiving support while the remaining funds are being recovered."

From another article on ABC News:

Quote

GoFundMe released a joint statement Thursday night with Cozen O'Connor, the Philadelphia-based law firm representing Johnny Bobbitt Jr., promising that the 35-year-old Marine Corps veteran and former firefighter will receive the rest of the funds.

"Johnny will be made whole and we're committing that he'll get the balance of the funds that he has not yet received or benefited from. GoFundMe's goal has always been to ensure Johnny gets support he deserves," the statement said in part.

"As we've said, our platform is backed by the GoFundMe Guarantee, which means that in the rare case that GoFundMe, law enforcement or a user finds campaigns are misused, donors and beneficiaries are protected," the company said in the statement. "We're fulfilling that commitment today and we will continue to work with Johnny's team to make sure he's receiving all donated amounts."

I'm not even going to say what I think should happen to these two. Any bets they're democrats?

While I believe that the couple ran a scam, I don't know whether that was their original intent or they simply got greedy. Either way, they are being held criminally liable. The boyfriend looks like an extra from "Jersey Shore".

I do wonder why Bobbitt was evicted from the camper. Not going to speculate. However, that side of the story could either damn the couple further or cast Bobbitt in a bad light.

There is a winner in this saga. GoFundMe has incalculable free publicity as being an honest company. I was skeptical of them. Sure, take a percentage for services rendered. But isn't GoFundMe just a PO Box for con artists? Standing by their policy makes them Good Guy Greg.

Let's put it this way: No, I won't make that bet. But if it turns out they are, I won't be a bit surprised.

Re - The last paragraph: Agreed. GoFundMe just got an incalculable PR boost. And good for them, they clearly deserve it. When it came down to crunch time, they came through with shining colors. Count me impressed.

(Just to clarify - I don't mean to say I ever had a "bad" impression of GoFundMe or was "skeptical" or anything like that. Not at all. It's just that I'd never spent any time thinking about them one way or the other. But now, after this, if anybody ever asks me about GFM my endorsement will be glowing.)

They are indeed scum. And after the poor man in question coughed up his last 20 bucks to help her out by buying her gasoline. And after that, to turn on him and screw him out of his money, complete scum.
