Andrew Cuomo Beats Back Progressive Challenge From Cynthia Nixon

Washington Examiner
by Laura Barrón-López
September 13, 2018 09:30 PM

Excerpt:

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo beat progressive challenger Cynthia Nixon Thursday night, after a vicious and sensational Democratic primary.

Progressives had hoped Nixon could ride an insurgent wave within the party and stop Cuomo from winning a third-term. Nixon did push Cuomo to the left on a number of issues, forcing the incumbent to shift his positions including on the legalization of marijuana.

Cuomo left nothing to chance, however, spending millions on TV ads, and mailers, and touted endorsements from former Secretary do State Hillary Clinton and Vice President Joe Biden.

The rifts within the party were on full display within weeks of Nixon jumping into the race when she locked down the endorsement of the progressive Working Families Party.

Despite Cuomo’s strong lead in virtually every poll, Nixon’s camp pointed to the growing number of upsets by progressive candidates, starting with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s victory earlier this summer over incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley in New York’s 14th district. Nixon sought to tie Cuomo to poor management, and corruption in state government.

I never...never...would have believed I'd ever be relieved to see Andrew Cuomo win any election, even a Dem primary. But just about the only possible step down from Cuomo would be Cynthia Nixon. And since we're talking New York, there's the distinct possibility she'd actually win the general! So incredibly, I'm actually delighted to see Cuomo won.

That's where I'm at, too. Nixon is a bilious sow and she had no business running for anything but a taxi.

Now the GOP challenger needs to whip Cuomo's ass and take NY back... Since it IS part of America and America always has been THAT GREAT to start with.

It was smoke and mirrors. Meant to give cuomo the appearance of competition in the party. Nothing more.

I get the tongue-in-cheek, but really? You voted for that mindless socialist moron?

You're even farther gone than I'd ever realized.

I for one am glad she did. Nixon's so out there that I think that Molinaro had a better chance of beating Nixon than he does of beating "sfachim junior."

No doubt Cuomo is vulnerable, especially since he's vying for a 3rd term. The question is can Molinaro win enough of NYC to put himself over the top? I think he can. He has 3 winning issues as I see it...

1) He should bombard NY with the "America was never that great" soundbite.

2) He should remind NY voters that it was Trump's policies that brought jobs to NY, not the brain dead Cuomo and deBlasio. People still vote with their wallets and pocketbooks.

3) Molinaro should also pound away at the condition of the NYC subway, which is abysmal and has been so for the past few years, especially since deBlasio took office. The subways are controlled by the MTA which is controlled by the Governor, despite his protests to the contrary. Cuomo and deBlasio keep blaming each other and nothing gets done. Molinaro should runs ads that hammer away at both of these losers crying like children and pointing fingers at each other.

He should remind voters that both men are to blame for the current condition of the subways. He should also remind voters that all both men do is just snipe at each other while nothing gets fixed, all NYC riders suffer for it, and Molinaro will make it a priority to fix it.

One thing about NYC - doesn't matter what party you belong to, everyone needs to ride the subway.

In my opinion, if Molinaro concentrates on the above issues, then we has an excellent chance of winning enough of NYC to win the governorship.

HA! I didn't even realize who Coumo ran against. Always thought of her as Miranda, even though I've ran into her personally when she came down with her daughter for swimming classes in the city waayy back in the day.

All I've seen is Coumo adds where he was putting on a I'm-a-lefty's-lefty show, it was halarious...sorta like it's halarious to see people here thinking a NY GOP candidate has a snowball's chance in hell this election cycle.

Marc Molinaro came to speak at my neighborhood's civic association a few months ago. Guy was really sharp and polished, a LOT more so than a boob like Cuomo (who'd be nothing if it wasn't for nepotism). Molinaro became the mayor of his town when he was only 20!
