Pizzas must shrink or lose their toppings under Government anti-obesity plan

Laura Donnelly, Health Editor
Daily Telegraph
11 October 2018 • 9:21pm
Excerpt:

Pizzas must shrink or lose their toppings under Government plans to cap the calories in thousands of meals sold in restaurants and supermarkets.

Pies, ready meals and sandwiches will also be subject to the new proposed calorie limits, in a desperate bid to tackle Britain’s obesity crisis.

Under the draft proposals, a standard pizza for one should contain no more than 928 calories - far less than many sold by takeaways, restaurants and shops. And the recommendations suggest that a savoury pie should contain no more than 695 calories.

Public Health England (PHE) said “drastic” measures were needed to combat Britain’s obesity crisis.

Their plans will see recommended limits on thousands of regularly consumed foods, including cooking sauces, soups, burgers and processed meats.

It comes as new figures show rates of severe obesity among children have risen by more than a third in just over a decade.

More than one in five pupils are obese by the time they leave primary school - including around 24,000 children who are classed as “severely obese”.

Dr Alison Tedstone, PHE chief nutritionist, said the threat to children’s health had been “decades in the making”.

Earlier this week officials met with retailers, manufacturers, including Dominos’s pizza, Deliveroo, Just Eat, Macdonalds and KFC to discuss proposed “calorie caps” on thousands of popular foods.

While I agree that it’s a shame that kids are getting fatter and fatter, the reason isn’t as simple as saying that they need to eat less. If the UK is anything like here in the US, kids also don’t get the amount of exercise they used to and don't eat healthy meals most of the time. Cutting down on calories alone won’t do as much as a change in lifestyle to include eating less junk food and getting more physical activity.

Most of the food they were mentioning didn’t sound very healthy in the first place. Then unless they are enrolled in soccer or gymnastics or such, kids these days don’t seem to do much “playing” as we did when I was growing up.

This is another power grab from the “gubmint”. Do as we say, because we know what is best for you. If customers want smaller portions, they will ask for them and restaurants will comply. If the diet plates sell better than the hungry man servings do, then the restaurants will offer more and more of the diet selections – that is how free enterprise works. But, of course, the UK provides “free” health care so they have a vested interest in telling you what you can and cannot eat. You would think they would also be forcing the little kiddies to do daily workouts! Maybe that is their next edict.

Like Eric Hoffer said, a man who's own business is not worth minding will console himself by trying to mind yours.

So cut it in half and call it 2 pizzas, each with fewer calories. Problem solved.

I always have a problem with stated portion sizes when it comes to cheesecake. I get only four portions out of a whole cheesecake...

Al Gore should set up shop in England and sell calorie credits to restaurants.

Don't know why you two insist on butchering a perfectly good cheesecake.

Reminds me of the old joke. Guy goes to a restaurant and orders the ultra large gigantico pizza, all for himself. Waiter goes, wow, all that for you? You want it cut in 8 pieces or 16. Guy goes, better cut it in 8, I don't think I could eat 16 pieces.

What happens when people want to share a meal? How is the government going to click that?

This is proof that Darwin was wrong....... his belief was that the stupid wouldn't be able to reproduce... this is proof they simply get a job in government.

This is from a place in Yonkers, NY called Pizza Barn. I sure miss my downstate pizza.

Those look just awesome and delicious. There's more pepperonis on that slice than zits on a teenager's face. And I bet it's good pepperoni too.

Now I want pizza for breakfast damn you! :tongue2:

Well, we will just have to come up with rationing laws!

In between your Farrah Fawcett poster and the Lanborghini Countach one?
