Exasperated Democrats try to rein in Ocasio-Cortez

The effort is part carrot, part stick. But it's far from clear the anti-establishment political novice can be made to play ball.

POLITICO
By RACHAEL BADE and HEATHER CAYGLE
01/11/2019 05:03 AM EST

excerpt:

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is already making enemies in the House Democratic Caucus — and some of its members are mounting an operation to bring the anti-establishment, democratic socialist with 2.2 million Twitter followers into the fold.

The effort, described by nearly 20 lawmakers and aides, is part carrot, part stick: Some lawmakers with ties to Ocasio-Cortez are hoping to coax her into using her star power to unite Democrats and turn her fire on Republicans. Others simultaneously warn Ocasio-Cortez is destined for a lonely, ineffectual career in Congress if she continues to treat her own party as the enemy.

“I’m sure Ms. Cortez means well, but there’s almost an outstanding rule: Don’t attack your own people,” said Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.). “We just don’t need sniping in our Democratic Caucus.”

Incumbent Democrats are most annoyed by Ocasio-Cortez’s threat to back primary opponents against members of their ranks she deems too moderate. But their frustration goes beyond that: Democratic leaders are upset that she railed against their new set of House rules on Twitter the first week of the new Congress. Rank and file are peeved that there’s a grassroots movement to try to win her a top committee post they feel she doesn’t deserve.

Even some progressives who admire AOC, as she’s nicknamed, told POLITICO that they worry she’s not using her notoriety effectively.

“She needs to decide: Does she want to be an effective legislator or just continue being a Twitter star?” said one House Democrat who’s in lockstep with Ocasio Cortez’s ideology. “There’s a difference between being an activist and a lawmaker in Congress.”

Yep, LOL, me too. When somebody is even too radical and clueless for the Democrats (who are, let's face it, about as radical and clueless as it gets), she's definitely one seriously whacko lunatic.

I think she's merely one of the more colorful and quotable so she garners the most attention. Unfortunately, there are lots more like her but on the plus side, those democrats still in possession of their faculties have their work cut out for them.:P

It would be interesting to know where she’ll be five years from now—still in Congress or hosting a show on MSNBC—but otherwise I’m getting kind of tired of her. It’s like having nothing but the movie Idiocracy constantly on television; funny movie, but after a while it would still be nice to be able to change the channel.

Try to follow the logic in her comments on The Wall:

OCASIO-CORTEZ: I can – I can tell you a very personal story. And as many

people know, I was working in restaurants just a year ago. And when the

president first assumed office with his – with his racist and violent

rhetoric, people started to send themselves home. And as we know, in

restaurants, hospitality, every American eats if you can, if you`re lucky

enough or we`re able to eat three times a day.

And that means we interact with the people who prepare our food three times

a day. When those people start to go home, local or rather go back to

their countries which they originated from because many of them consider

the United States their home, those places, they go into dysfunction.

I remember one of our lead cooks brought himself back to Mexico because he

was so scared of the president`s rhetoric. We had an insane amount of

dysfunction.

We`re talking about local restaurants. We`re talking about local

businesses. We`re talking about shuttering neighborhoods. And we`re

talking about people feeling unsafe.

And no one should feel unsafe in the United States of America. And that

includes our amazing and beautiful and productive immigrant community.
