Administration Cuts Education And Legal Services For Unaccompanied Minors

Excerpt:

The Trump administration is canceling English classes, recreational activities including soccer, and legal aid for unaccompanied migrant children who are staying in federally contracted migrant shelters.

The Office of Refugee Resettlement, which is charged with caring for minors who arrive at the Southern border without a parent or legal guardian, says the large influx of migrants in recent months is straining its already threadbare budget. ORR is part of the Department of Health and Human Services.

In an emailed statement, HHS spokeswoman Evelyn Stauffer said ORR is instructing its shelters to scale back on activities "that are not directly necessary for the protection of life and safety," as the Antideficiency Act requires.

One shelter-provider employee told The Associated Press the facility was notified on May 30 "that they wouldn't be reimbursing costs of providing education and other activities," throwing shelter officials into a panic over how they will cover the expenses, which they pay upfront.

The White House told Congress last month that the migrant shelter program could run out of money in June. The administration has requested nearly $3 billion to shore up the program in a supplemental budget request, but Congress has yet to approve the money.

The additional funding, according to Stauffer, would go toward increasing "shelter capacity in order to meet the needs of the minors in our custody while ORR works to find sponsors, usually family members, for the children."

Advocates for migrant children say the decision to cut services is unwise and possibly illegal. Children apprehended illegally entering the country must remain under the government's care in shelters until they are reunited with their parents or a sponsor while awaiting immigration court hearings.

Rochelle Garza, a staff attorney with the ACLU of Texas, told NPR all of the facilities that house unaccompanied minors are required to comply with federal law to obtain federal contracts. "But they also have to comply with state law because all these facilities need to be licensed within the state in which they're located." And among those requirements are educational and recreational provisions.

Possibly illegal to stop the allocation of American tax payer money to people from other countries to be educated in our nation? Isn't that a farce. It's illegal to spend the money on foreigners in our nation.

She said without those programs, housed children are "going to be sitting in prisonlike conditions."

So who is going to <censored> the money to keep them entertained? You? There is no law saying that you can't give more of your money to the government.

All the more reason to ship them back to Mexico.

Any other ways y'all would like to spend my tax money? Bad enough all the $$ I pay into the system for American welfare recipients, I don't need to support foreign imports as well.

Perhaps we can start an "Adopt-an-Illegal" program for progressives to put their money where their mouths are? To see if they really care?

ETA: NPR, aka New Pravda Radio. Pull the plug on this American TASS already. I'm sure that they can survive with all the donations from academia and the avocado toast crowd. They don't need taxpayer largesse.

Well, we could put them to work, but I'm pretty sure some on the left would cry about child labor.
But hey, you DO have an idea there.
Or did you mean we should continue to waste American taxpayer dollars, however 'minor the total might be, so foreigners are entertained?

The idle mind is the devil's playground, as they say. Besides, some of them are going to end up staying in the U.S.. Wouldn't learning English while they're just sitting in cages be a good thing?

Wouldnít it be a better thing if people including countries just worked on improving themselves instead of expecting someone else to? Send them back with a postage due stamp. Then they donít have to learn English. If you want to teach them English check into the peace Corp and go do it there. The 3rd world <censored> hole countries problems are not the United States responsibility and certainly not mine as a tax payer . But Iím sure thereís pleanty of missionary programs you can vollenteer for to go there and help them, maybe even a few Muslim ones. So by all means go that route or send your own money.

Maybe they should be back in their country doing going to school there since WE pay for it.

https://explorer.usaid.gov/cd/GTM
They received 257 MILLION dollars from us in 2017 for various aid programs
https://www.worldome...ala-population/
The population of Guatemala is about 17 Million. Minus of course the 2-3 Million that are actually IN the US driving on our roads drunk. (I arrested 1 Guatemalan for DUI at 7PM). We would be better served knocking on every door in Guatemala and giving everyone of them a Million Dollars and saying stay out of our country. Than instead continuing to piss away MILLIONs each year to basically fund their nation.

But you know, poor kids. What about the AMERICAN kids that have to pay the taxes and the interest on the debt run up by us adults that think it's our "responsibility" to pay for all these people.

We have a term for it in our dictionary.

Debt Bondage.
https://en.wikipedia...ki/Debt_bondage

Quote

is the pledge of a person's services as security for the repayment for a debt or other obligation, where the terms of the repayment are not clearly or reasonably stated, and the person who is holding the debt and thus has some control over the laborer, does not intend to ever admit that the debt has been repaid.

Our government has every American citizen in a form of debt bondage. We are all pledged as citizens to maintain and pay for the debt that Obama and the others have run up. There is no way we can personally pay off every cent of that debt and thus the government literally owns our efforts and lives. Thus the attitude in Washington that they own us.

Wake up and realize this is a form of slavery.
