State orders EU ambassador not to testify before House
October 08, 2019 - 08:32 AM EDT

A key witness in the House impeachment inquiry was ordered not to appear at a scheduled deposition on Tuesday, ramping up tensions between congressional Democrats and the Trump administration.

The State Department instructed Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland not to appear for the deposition, according to his counsel.

Sondland, a wealthy hotelier who had donated $1 million to President Trump's inaugural committee before taking his government position, was a figure in the text messages released by Democrats last week that showed administration officials discussing Trump's communications with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Trump's efforts to pressure Zelensky to launch an investigation into former Vice President Joe Biden and the business dealings of his son Hunter have become the impetus for the impeachment inquiry.

Sondland's lawyer said his client was "profoundly disappointed" that the State Department did not allow him to testify and expressed hope that the issues raised by the agency would be resolved promptly to allow him to testify.

"Ambassador Sondland believes strongly that he acted at all times in the best interests of the United States, and he stands ready to answer the Committee’s questions fully and truthfully," Robert Luskin, Sondland's lawyer, said in a statement.

As a sitting U.S. ambassador, Luskin said his client had no choice but to follow the State Department's direction. He noted that Sondland had traveled to Washington from Brussels to appear.

Committee aides did not immediately return requests for comment. House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) is expected to speak to the media later Tuesday morning.

Kurt Volker, the former special envoy to Ukraine, testified before the House Intelligence, Foreign Affairs, and Oversight and Reform committees last week and provided text messages between himself, Sondland and William Taylor, a top official in the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine.

Sondland is shown in the text messages to be rejecting concerns from Taylor, a career diplomat, that Trump wanted the Ukrainian government to dig up dirt on the Bidens to help his reelection campaign. Sondland is also shown suggesting that the diplomats take their conversations offline.

Uh-oh! Trump better pack his bags. This will be the smoking gun! I'm sure this will get Pence too. I hope Nancy Pelosi enjoys her new digs in the White House.

Pathetic.

On June 20, 2012, President Barack Obama asserted executive privilege in order to withhold certain Department of Justice documents related to the Operation Fast and Furious controversy ahead of a United States House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform vote to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress for refusing to produce the documents.[27][28] Later the same day, the House Committee voted 23–17 along party lines to hold Holder in contempt of Congress over not releasing the documents.[29]

It's called precedent, not President. When a President gets to choose who will testify to Congress. Remember the Executive Branch is a co-equal branch of government from the Congress (big congress including the Senate) not a subordinate to the House or Representatives. Therefore the POTUS can choose if he wishes to play along.

WASHINGTON — The White House said Tuesday night that it would refuse to allow its director of political strategy to testify Wednesday before a Republican-led House committee investigating whether the administration had illegally conducted political activity in the West Wing.

If the rule is good for Obama, it's good for the next POTUS.

President Zelenskyy said that PRESIDENT Donald J. Trump did not "pressure" him. Read the transcript again. Zelenskyy is the one who brought up Biden.

Yep, this is how executive privilege works. Piece of Schiff can cry "obstruction" all he wants, the house has no subpoena power, this is not an official impeachment inquiry and if it were it wouldn't be the intelligence committee running it.

This is a good chess move by the state department. You want us to testify under subpoena? Then take the impeachment through the normal process, not your invented one. Can’t have your cake and eat it too.

Of course, SmellsLikeSchiff will cry to CNN and MSNBC about this unlawful behavior. When it’s actually time to look in the mirror.

I don't like or trust Trump.......but he has been pretty good compared to my expectations. I think he shoots himself in the foot often with unnecessary statements (but that makes him the most transparent President of our lifetimes)...........but the democrats are exponentially worse. If they want to have REAL impeachment hearings, then have the balls to start the process. They have been crying wolf so often and so loudly, I don't believe their BS anymore.

I am glad that Trump exerted his authority in this situation and I hope he keeps pointing out that this is just a dog and pony show to help the democrat nominee next fall, and nothing will come of it.

OMG! Just think of the repercussions! Remember the awful things that happened when Lois Lerner and Eric Holder were held in Contempt of Congress!!!

Oh, wait...never mind.

The President continues to run circles around the entire Washington house of bedlam.

I am more than ready for the artillery as during the "1812 Overture". The President is a showman and Barr is a director par excellence.

Everything up to now has merely been the build up orchestrated by Trump. He will time his counter punch to deliver the greatest impact and allow his tormentors no place to run.

The progressive/socialist house of cards is as unstable as the old Soviet Union. First it has to be toppled then the clean up, disposal of the trash and rebuilding can begin.

Trump is done letting the Dems have their cake and eat it too with all of the hyperventilated impeachment bluster.

Launch the formal investigation or be gone. We all know why they aren't doing it and it will only help Trump once they do.

Given the lies Adam Schiff told during the Mueller investigation, you're still hanging your hat on him?! In my mind, there's at least a 50/50 chance HE'S the whistleblower! Like has been stated, anonymous status granted to a whistleblower is to protect their job, not their safety. Why is Schiff SO adamant about protecting the whistleblower's identity? The man's a lying sob...

I've been saying that since Schiff-head made the announcement that there is a "whistleblower". Then he went on to "parody" the transcript of the call without even having read it.

The Democrats want the snitch to "testify" at an undisclosed location outside of the District of Columbia. Also, any recordings will be blurred with voice distortion. And... questions will come from a panel of lawyers not from members of Congress. Because this is all about protecting our democracy and the Constitution from the bad orange man. Most ethical and transparent summer of recovery - evah!

MSNBC a week ago: The whistleblower will be asked in front of congress! This will put immense pressure on Trump! Shifty move by Schiff.

MSNBC now: The whistleblower’s identity cannot be revealed! This is because of immense, and maybe illegal, pressure by Trump! Schiff doing the right thing!

Yeah, there's just too much faux concern for the whistleblower's safety, especially when you consider the way they paraded Blasey Ford during the Kavanaugh debacle. How anyone can swallow this nonsense when the transcript of the call is there for anyone to read is a real eye opener. Leftists are corrupt to the core...
