"The German and French governments should be commended. Too many people are being bowled over by Bush and Tony Blair in Britain. It's ludicrous to expect the whole world to follow what they want. America doesn't have the moral right to tell other people what to do. To say the whole world has to fall into line is you-know-what. I hope more people will rise up."

Killer Bees
After calling George Bush and Tony Blair “Killer Bees,” he continued:

Quote

“They are trying to sell the world something that isn’t true. When Donald Rumsfeld makes statements like, ‘If you don’t support our war you are supporting terrorism,’ I feel disgusted. They have shown no evidence of a link. This has nothing to do with disarmament. It’s about oil. We all know Iraq is a country with a great reserve of natural resources. I find it difficult to buy what Bush is telling us about this being a moral war.”

MULTICULTURAL AWARENESS WEEK: Spike Lee on war, minorities
Director takes on Bush war policy, exploitation of minorities and UND nickname, too
By David Dodds
Herald Staff Writer

Herald photo by Spike Lee

Spike Lee talks to the audience in Chester Friz Auditorium on Monday. Lee is the featured guest for this year's Multicultural Awareness Week on the UND campus.

A standing ovation greeted award-winning filmmaker Spike Lee as he took UND's Chester Fritz Auditorium stage Monday to talk about politics, life and the pursuit of dreams.

A die-hard New York Knicks fan, Lee's first words to the nearly 1,700 in attendance delved into UND's athletic history.

"So this is where Phil Jackson went to school," the 46-year-old Lee said about the one-time Knicks forward and current Los Angeles Lakers head coach, drawing smiles and some applause from the crowd.

"That's a pretty good mark for this school," he added.

Without much transition, Lee dove into a criticism-laced commentary on the Bush administration, its war policy and what he sees as a popular sentiment against war protesters.

"That's crazy," Lee said. "Who says you can't be for the troops and against the war at the same time?

"We have a lot of dictators in the world. Why is it we chose Iraq?"

Somebody from the audience yelled "Oil!"

Lee started again: "Then we've got North Korea, a semi-dictatorship but we've got enough rice already."

The quip drew more laughs and applause.

Media power

Lee's tirade was erratic at times, jumping quickly from one topic to the next, political and not-so.

Lee even found time to work in a brief reference to universities such as St. John's (N.Y.) and Marquette, which have discarded American Indian nicknames for alternatives. He also alluded to UND's Fighting Sioux debate.

"It's funny, some people just want to keep holding on," he said.

But mostly, Lee's speech was about the destructive power of media, both at home and around the world.

"We dominate the world through our culture," Lee said. "Coke, Pepsi, McDonald's, rap music and rock 'n' roll, it's through media we dominate the world culture."

Lee said media especially hurts minorities through the messages that are spread. He said media is the reason most black men see that their only options in life are to play professional sports, become a rap music artist or sell drugs.

"This model is what many African Americans live by," he said. "Most don't think they have a choice."

Answered questions

Lee said that those trends can be turned around through education and by pursuing a dream that one truly loves, never stopping until it's achieved no matter what others say.

Lee spent about an hour talking to the audience before fielding dozens of questions, ranging in topic from his body of films and the stars he's worked with to his views on affirmative action, gun control and Fox News' Bill O'Reilly.

He told the audience that O'Reilly was hypocritical for lashing out at Pepsi for featuring oft-profane rap star Ludricris in a television commercial and saying nothing about Pepsi's commercials with notorious metal rocker and equally profane Ozzy Osbourne.

He also said that he was pleased to see black film stars Denzel Washington and Halle Berry recently win Academy Awards, but he was not as pleased with the roles for which they were honored. Washington won for his portrayal of a rogue cop in "Training Day" and Berry for her performance as the wife of a death-row inmate involved in an affair with a prison guard in "Monster's Ball."

Born Shelton Jackson Lee, Spike Lee is best known for small independent works such as "She's Gotta Have It" and the Oscar-nominated "Do the Right Thing" as well as the $33 million blockbuster "Malcom X." He is also a video music director, author and professor at New York University.

Director/actor Spike Lee’s scurrilous charge that Trent Lott “is a card carrying member of the Klan,” didn’t faze Robin Roberts on Tuesday’s Good Morning America. After all, the ABC News reader had just finished praising Lee as “my good friend” and “my old friend” and gushing: “You are involved in so much, your films make us think.” But Diane Sawyer demanded that Lee offer some proof: “You can't come on and say somebody's a card carrying member of the Klan!"

Unable to offer any proof that Lott’s now infamous comment about wishing Strom Thurmond had won in 1948 means he’s part of a murderous gang, Lee insisted Lott is a member of the Klan in a “metaphysical” sense.

Of course, not a word from Lee about Democratic Senator Robert Byrd who was a member of the Klan in a very real sense.

Lee appeared during the 8:30am half hour on the December 17 ABC program to plug his new movie, 25th Hour, about a man’s last 24 hours before entering prison.

News reader Roberts handled the segment and after the laudatory comments about Lee quoted above, the two discussed the movie until Roberts raised Lott. MRC analyst Patrick Gregory took down the subsequent exchange:
Roberts: "What is of interest this morning is Trent Lott-"

Quote

Lee: "Gotta go. The man is a card carrying member of the Klan."

Roberts, unfazed, pressed on: "And you say you feel that he has to-"

Quote

Lee: "Gotta go, he doesn't belong in the Senate. I know he has that hood in the closet somewhere, the hood and the robe....

Roberts: “What about apologies?”

Quote

Lee “...I would like to see Bush, Powell, Miss Rice, let's go. You know, you're prominent African-Americans in the Bush administration, what's this 'mum's the word?' Bush got you in check, you can't speak out? You gonna let this guy say something like that and you're not gonna say a word? Uh uh."

Of course, anyone with any political sense knows their silence speaks volumes.

Roberts: "This story is far from over, and I think Diane wants to weigh in a little bit, Diane?"
From another area of the studio, actually a different floor I believe of the Times Square studio where she stood with some people brought in off the street, Sawyer demanded: "Spike, it's Diane. You can't come on and say somebody's a card carrying member of the Klan!"
Roberts noted that Lee could not hear Sawyer and so repeated her point: "She said, in her sweet way, 'You can't say somebody is a card carrying member of the Klan!’"
Lee: "Why not?"
Sawyer: "How can you prove this?”
Roberts: “Do you have proof? To say someone like that, that's very, that's putting it out there."

Quote

Lee: "Look at the man's statements. The man is a segregationist. If you say-"

Roberts: "But does that make him-"
Lee: "Yes."
Roberts: "To say 'the Klan' is very-"
Lee, caught in his scurrilous hyperbole:

Quote

"It's the same thing. It's metaphysical, whatever you wanna call it. The man -- if you say this country would have been better if old redneck Strom Thurmond had been President, that's just saying 'Let's just keep blacks folks, black folks would be in their place and we wouldn't have none of these problems,' that's the same thing like Charlton Heston said in 'Bowling for Columbine.' It's the same thing, I mean we could dress it up any way we want to, but when you come down to it, he's straight out redneck."

Roberts remained impressed with Lee’s insights: “Well, those are some powerful statements and we’ll have to have you back at some point and talk about this.”

Robert’s affection for the left-wing Lee is no surprise given her support of Bill Bradley’s presidential bid. As recalled in the April 29 CyberAlert after she left ESPN for ABC News, she helped raise money for Bradley. Roberts emceed a $1 million-plus fundraiser in November 1999. USA Today quoted Roberts as hopefully predicting at it that Bradley would be “going from Madison Square Garden to the Rose Garden.” For details: http://www.mediaresearch.org/cyberalerts/2...b20020429.asp#4

Hollywood hatemonger Spike Lee is as stupid as he is spiteful: He has Republican Sen. Trent Lott mixed up with Democrat ex-Klansman Sen. Robert Byrd.

Quote

"The man [Lott] is a card-carrying member of the Klan. I know he has that hood in the closet," Lee lied today on ABC's gabfest "Good Morning America."

After cranking out one movie bomb after another in recent years, Lee appeared on the program to promote his latest flick. "I guess no one is going to the movie now," he said.

Read more on Spike Lee by Larry Elder:

Isn't getting a lecture on racial sensitivity from Spike Lee sort of like taking tips on dating etiquette from Marv Albert? Remember a few years ago when Spike Lee announced he wants to be interviewed only by black reporters? [B]Remember during the filming of Jungle Fever, and reports of cast members complaining about Spike Lee's alleged abusive treatment of white women? Remember after the release of Malcolm X, Lee implied a racist conspiracy to miscalculate and lowball box-office receipts of his movie?

And remember when the Director, [b]warmly and sensitively
, explained his feeling toward mixed race couples:

Quote

"I give interracial couples a look. Daggers. They get uncomfortable when they see me on the street."
Hmmm. During the O.J. Simpson case, the defense alleged that officer Mark Fuhrman, for no reason, pulled over cars with interracial couples. So when Mark Fuhrman expresses displeasure at interracial couples, he's racist. Spike Lee does it--well, Spike must have had his reasons.
