Tim Robbins

Well, uh, some boycotts are bad
Robbins complains about boycotts against Hollywood celebrities who speak out? Maybe he should have a word with his live-in girlfriend, Susan Sarandon. Listen to her giving assistance to the successful "Stop Dr. Laura" campaign. Sarandon gave the movement permission to mention her as a supporter fo the boycott:

Quote

"Dr. Laura has a right to her opinion, but I think it's irresponsible of Paramount to not give equal time, at the very least, to a person with a more enlightened and contemporary perspective. I'm totally against wasting the airwaves giving visibility to a person who is clearly in dire need of compassion, education, and a good shrink herself."

Was that Tim Robbins doing his best imitation of Tom Daschle with an FDR delivery?

The following quotes are taken from a speech in which Robbins complained about the lack of access to the media, while accessing the media at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., on April 15, 2003. If you can find the audio, you'll hear him trying to sound like FDR in this oh so self-important speech.

How dare President Bush! After terrorists murdered 3,000 American civilians, President Bush told the world to choose sides. It was about time. I guess Robbins is confused because doesn't know what side he's on:

Quote

"I imagined our leaders seizing upon this moment of unity in America [after 9/11], this moment when no one wanted to talk about Democrat versus Republican, white versus black, or any of the other ridiculous divisions that dominate our public discourse....And then came the speech: You are either with us or against us. And the bombing began."

Then, he compared the the United States of America to the former Soviet Union:

Quote

"In the 19 months since 9-11, we have seen our democracy compromised by fear and hatred. Basic inalienable rights, due process, the sanctity of the home have been quickly compromised in a climate of fear. A unified American public has grown bitterly divided, and a world population that had profound sympathy and support for us has grown contemptuous and distrustful, viewing us as we once viewed the Soviet Union, as a rogue state."

Maybe if they got married, instead of the usual Hollywood shack-up, they'd be "our" kids not "the" kids:

Quote

"This past weekend, Susan and I and the three kids went to Florida for a family reunion of sorts."

He thinks the right is shutting him and his crowd up. No, his friends just can't take the heat of a debate because they have no facts to back up their arguments:

Quote

"And the most frightening thing about the weekend was the amount of times we were thanked for speaking out against the war because that individual speaking thought it unsafe to do so in their own community, in their own life. Keep talking, they said; I haven't been able to open my mouth."

Tim, get a clue, this teacher is right! It's about time even a small percentage of the educators got it. He need not worry, though, the schools are still bastions of liberalism:

Quote

"A relative tells me that a history teacher tells his 11-year-old son, my nephew, that Susan Sarandon is endangering the troops by her opposition to the war."

He thinks he has death threats? Welcome to the world Robbin's "peace-loving, compassionate" friends on the left have made for me since starting Hollywood Halfwits:

Quote

"Death threats have appeared on other prominent anti-war activists' doorsteps for their views. Relatives of ours have received threatening e-mails and phone calls."

Poor baby! He must want a constitutional right to make appearances wherever and whenever he wants. The left never understands that private organizations have the right to choose who they want:

Quote

"Two weeks ago, the United Way canceled Susan's appearance at a conference on women's leadership. And both of us last week were told that both we and the First Amendment were not welcome at the Baseball Hall of Fame."

As James Hirsen, writing for Newsmax, said "But there’s also such a thing as the free market. And the rule is in a free market, free expression has real consequences. Just ask John Rocker, Dr. Laura or Trent Lott:

Quote

"A famous middle-aged rock-and-roller called me last week to thank me for speaking out against the war, only to go on to tell me that he could not speak himself because he fears repercussions from Clear Channel. 'They promote our concert appearances,' he said. 'They own most of the stations that play our music. I can't come out against this war.'"

Robbins does not understand that perhaps he's just being given the axe because he's lost his audience. A chill wind? No, it's the American free-market. Have you heard of that concept? You are sure going to learn about it.

Quote

"A chill wind is blowing in this nation. A message is being sent through the White House and its allies in talk radio and Clear Channel and Cooperstown. If you oppose this administration, there can and will be ramifications."

This guy obviously has not been to a peace rally lately:

Quote

"Every day, the air waves are filled with warnings, veiled and unveiled threats, spewed invective and hatred directed at any voice of dissent. And the public, like so many relatives and friends that I saw this weekend, sit in mute opposition and fear."

No Tim, Hollywood glorifies violence. The real wars we fight are to protect our country. There is a huge difference (notice how his speech writer told him to throw in Clinton and Kosovo--so we think he's even-handed):

Quote

"I remember when the Columbine High School shootings happened. President Clinton criticized Hollywood for contributing to this terrible tragedy -- this, as we were dropping bombs over Kosovo. Could the violent actions of our leaders contribute somewhat to the violent fantasies of our teenagers? Or is it all just Hollywood and rock and roll?"

Where are the democrats, he asks? Many figured out we did the right thing in Iraq. They understand and Robbins does not:

Quote

"And in the midst of all this madness, where is the political opposition? Where have all the Democrats gone?"

Americans are not living in fear of losing our freedom. Robbins is just in fear or losing his ability to be heard whenever he feels like it:

Quote

"In this time when a citizenry applauds the liberation of a country as it lives in fear of its own freedom."

No one has taken away even one of his rights. We're all just exhausted listening to these guys. Yes, it's true there is punishment, but that's going to come from his former fans. And he speaks of "hate?"

If you want to see hate, read the signs at the anti-war protests, read the quotes from celebrities on this site. That's were all the hatred started, Tim.

Quote

"Our ability to disagree, and our inherent right to question our leaders and criticize their actions define who we are. To allow those rights to be taken away out of fear, to punish people for their beliefs, to limit access in the news media to differing opinions is to acknowledge our democracy's defeat. These are challenging times. There is a wave of hate that seeks to divide us -- right and left, pro-war and anti-war."

The New Fundamentalists: American Businessmen

Quote

“Let us find a way to resist fundamentalism that leads to violence--fundamentalism of all kinds, in Al Qaeda and within our own government. What is our fundamentalism? Cloaked in patriotism and our doctrine of spreading democracy throughout the world, our fundamentalism is business, the unfettered spread of our economic interests throughout the globe. Our resistance to this war should be our resistance to profit at the cost of human life. Because that is what these drums beating over Iraq are really about. This is about business. The business of distracting American attention from Enron and Halliburton, the financial scandals that directly connect this Administration to the heart of what is now wrong with the American economy. These scandals have disappeared from the front pages of our newspapers as we argue about this war.

“In the name of fear and fighting terror we are giving the reins of power to oilmen looking for distraction from their disastrous economic performance, oilmen more interested in a financial bottom line than a moral bottom line, oilmen ready to expand their influence with new contracts on the soil our bombers have plowed, new contracts forged with governments that do not allow democracy on their soil for fear of losing control over the oil that governs their lives, that governs our lives. The majority in America knows this. A dormant majority in America waits with anticipation for the politician who will stand in front of the American people in defiance of the oil companies and advocate alternative energy as a way to extricate ourselves from this culture of violence that threatens our future.

“Let us resist this war and our impending oil war in Colombia, and let us resist fundamentalism in all its guises. Let us hate war in all its forms, whether its weapon is a US missile or its weapon is a domestic airplane.“

War only a Cover to Keep Control the House

Quote

"I'm against this whole, 'Let's bomb a new country because things aren't going our way'. It's the cost of human lives I resent. To put American soldiers in harm's way and to do everything to change the subject so that Republicans can keep control of the House."

Tim and Susan Threaten to Wreck Career of Fellow Actors

Quote

Whatever the explanation, SAGtivist Susan Sarandon was outraged. As for Tim Robbins, her long-time partner, well, he seems to have been channeling Stalin's prosecutor, the late, and much-missed, Andrei Vyshinsky. "We are bringing Hurley to trial," he foamed, "She will not get away with it." Note that "we." As Mr. Robbins, a prominent supporter of the strike, well knows, his comments are likely to resonate with those union officials responsible for deciding the former fembot's fate. The consequences of a "guilty" verdict could be serious. The equally influential Ms. Sarandon has supported calls for a lifetime ban on "scab" actors. If the case goes against Ms. Hurley she may never work in Hollywood again.

This is not a problem that is likely to face her tormentors. The spectacle of two successful stars threatening to destroy the career of a fellow actor, would, you might think, at least raise a flicker of concern or a murmur of protest, but it has not. No one is even asking what it is about Ms Hurley that has so enraged Mr. Robbins. After all, she is not the highest profile performer to have crossed the picket lines. Tiger Woods, for example, broke union rules to shill for Buick (he has since been fined for this offense), while Shaquille O'Neal did the same for Disney. On these cases, however, the exquisitely PC Sarandon and Robbins are not reported as having had much to say. Criticizing Elizabeth Hurley, a foreigner, was one thing. Telling the popular athletes, people of Color after all, where they could or could not work, might have been altogether more awkward.

Robbins flew into Britain to support their anti-war movement and march in the "Stop the War March" in London.

Speaking at a London press conference with Reverend Jesse Jackson:

Quote

"Most people in this world are against the war. The leaders of my country do not seem to care about what people of the world think."
