NOTE: After posting all of this, I just realized that the website he writes for, also does the same thing with excerpted articles he's complaining about here. In addition, it appears to me that he may be writing under a pen name (after complaining I didn't use my full name).

An author of a very minor article was upset because we excerpted it (my first upset author EVER--all like the traffic). I had an "interesting" exchange with him. Here are some of the best parts.

Upon learning his article was excerpted:

QUOTE
Why has someone Hijacked, edited and posted my copyrighted article in the forums ?

Who's in charge here ?

Why are Email addresses of Forum Administrators hidden and no way to contact someone ?

Who is going to pay to have my edited article posted ?

Why are the Admins hiding anonymously ?

How do you contact a LIVE BODY from this plagiarism site ?

I wrote a very nice email back to him explaining how we respect copyrights, give attribution, always give a link to the source etc. He replied:

QUOTE
Baloney !

Look, whoever you are - your user *** hijacked, edited and posted my article and I want it OFF your site.  You do not have permission to use excerpts or quotations thereof and you are hereby notified by the owner you are not welcome.

<snip -- irrelevent>

I have seen the garbage and nut stuff posted to your site and don't want my name associated with that blog cesspool and you are hereby notified not to use brief quotes, excerpts or extended passages from any of my material posted anywhere now or in the future.

I don't do the blog-cesspool trip and if your site is lacking in original, intellectual content, which appears to be true, DO NOT plagiarize mine.  Copyright and intellectual property laws allow me to do that and I do hereby demand your site cease and desist.

You have not seen the original content as your pin-head blogger edited it - who the hell does he think he is ?

I wrote back and told him I'd take it off--why would I want to give and ameteur the the publicity anyway, I said? His reply:

QUOTE
Amateur ?

My book "*****" is going to be published - the
research and fact-checking has taken three
years...

That makes my agreement with the publisher a
'professional' arrangement and me a professional
writer of history, strategic affairs and
geopolitics.

My upcoming book and everything else is
copyrighted.

I personally know ****, founder of
**** (the site htat hosted his article) and go back a ways with him - I
have sent him an Email - he's not going to care
about your site.

What you have is not an excerpt - it has over 75%
of the word count of the original - a
thinly-veiled attempt to rip off my work.  75% of
the word count would make that 75 of 100 pages -
oooops.

***** gets my work exclusively
and permission is granted to NO ONE. Got that ?

My copyright statement says "...brief quotations
only, no excerpts, web-site postings of excerpts,
or extended passages..."

My book places me in a different category than
the amateurs and disaffected types who post to
blog sites, not unlike spray-painting their name
on a wall to let the world know they exist.  My
lawyer says the agreement with the publisher
places me in a category of intellectual property
and content not extended to people who just post
opinions in Cyberspace.

Amateur, hardly.  See my book when it is
published - you can even get a free HTML
copyrighted version  when it comes out as I have
allotted one hundred such copies.

Look, the inane comments posted on your site in
response to my article in no way add to the
topic, enlighten anyone or add to the collective
intellect.

I honestly don't see any useful discourse
occurring on your site, though there are many
opinions and inane comments by many who are,
apparently, intellectually lazy.  From all
appearance you traffic in many people with way
too much time on their hands.

Were the appearance of your site otherwise, I
would gladly give permission.  Your site is in no
way a equal to, or a counterpart to
*****, which has many professional and
published authors writing for the site.

I do one site and one site only - ***.
Only *** regulars get any more than time of day -
in fact, they get every courtesy I can extend.
Sorry, but that does not extend elsewhere,
especially to blogger sites, which generally have
a bad name and reputation.

<his name>
"Amateur"

More from him:

QUOTE
Your site is a lowest-common-denominator blogger
site.  I read many of the rude posts and comments
by your bloggers.

He complained that I did not have personal contact information on the site. I mentioned it's not goo dpractice since I have a family and I've received death threats. His reply:

QUOTE
Death Threats ?

You demonstrate my point and underscore my
concern about being associated with extremist
blogger sites but, apparently, fail to get it or
otherwise catch on to what I am saying.

I have no death threats but many have disagreed -
and they get the courtesy a reasoned response -
not a rude series of comments by anonymous
bloggers on a blogger site, people too ashamed to
post a real name or take responsibility for what
they say.

And that is exactly the problem with the
dog-eat-dog blogging universe...

After seeing your site, I completely understand
why you and your staff may be having problems
with individuals wishing to do you bodily or
remunerative harm.

You can also kill that annoying account I had to
create to post a violation notice - was convinced
I'll be sold to SPAMMERS over that...

Then, he "told on me" to the owner of the **** site:

QUOTE
That blogger site deleted my article that had
been thinly edited and posted as an "excerpt".

I suppose you can ignore the earlier Email - I am
just concerned that those annoying, extremist
blogger sites would feel free to copy/paste my
articles, which are exclusively for your ****.

I looked around the Blogger section of
RighNation.us and it's the usual mish-mash of
rudeness and irresponsible adults who believe the
anonymity of a screen name is a license to be
insulting and rude.

Some guy named "Mark" at RightNation.US said you
will likely be angry that you are deprived of the
site traffic you could get by my stuff being
copy/pasted to their site by the intellectually
lazy.

Thought you would get a chuckle from that - them
plagiarizing MY stuff would hurt YOU.
Unbelievable ! Stranger things happen...

When I thanked him for providing good hate Mail content, he replied:

QUOTE
I guess revenge is the ultimate refuge of a scoundrel.

Now you are amply demonstrating my concern with
extremist blogger sites !

People who work under a veil of anonymity and have
the temerity to insult and take revenge without the balls
to use a REAL NAME and back up what they say.

Turns out you can't have a heated disagreement without
turning into a little weasel, huh ?

Those extremist blogger sites are all the same.

No wonder people want to kick your ass above your
shoulders...I understand completely.

Whoever you are...
