2003: Last year of free speech
Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder showed his true self to his fans at April 1, 2003 concert at Denver's Pepsi Center.

Quote

“I don’t know if you heard about this thing called Freedom of Speech, man. It’s worth thinking about it, because it’s going away. In the last year of being able to use it, we’re sure as freak gonna use it, and I’m not gonna apologize.”

Half way through his first encore, Vedder came out wearing a Bush mask, which he then put on a microphone stand like a severed head. They played their blatantly anti-Bush song, Bu$hleauger, with the lyrics:

Quote

"A confidence man, but why so beleagued? He's not a leader, he's a Texas leaguer".

At one point he either jabs the mask with the mike stand, or puts it on the floor and stomps on it. Dozens of clear-thinking fans left the concert.

Another promise to leave the U.S. broken
Promises of an entertainment world exodus from the USA in the face of a Republican victory in the November 2000 presidential election began in August 2000, when USA Today reported the opinions of Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder about the upcoming political contest:

Quote

"With three Supreme Court positions opening in the next administration, I'm frightened to think of a Republican in office, especially one raised by a father who was in the CIA. I'm moving to a different country if little Damien II gets elected."
