To keep the website from overloading during the Election Day frenzy, we are limiting access to the discussion forum to only those who are registered and logged in. Normally, roughly 60% of visitors at any given time are unregistered guests. I suspect this percentage would shot up to 75-80% today. So, this temporary change will significantly reduce forum browsing traffic, saving the server's processing power for our valued Community Supporters and the Community-Supported Members and Registered Guests. Registration is open for any guest as usual. Note: You'll see guests listed in User List at the bottom of the main forum page, but they can only see the log-in or registration page.
In addition, we will be disabling the search functions. Note that the search function is involved not only in the "search forum" feature, but also the "View Members" ability and a few other things.
I've also increased the number of posts display per page in topic view to 20, to reduce SQL queries.
I've removed the showing of which users are in a topic while you are viewing it. I know this is a nice feature, but it uses extra resources.
This should all be enough to reduce the load on the server. but if need be some other noncritical functionality may be disabled.
This will be in effect for Tuesday and possibly Wednesday.
If you have any questions, please post them in the Technical Support forum and not PM or email the moderators.
Special Request to Members: It would probably be helpful if you all didn't go into ChitChat, The Back Room or any of the other noncritical forums for the day as much as possible. I understand we'll need some stress relief, but maybe we could avoid participating in some of the sillier topics in there that pile post upon post quickly.
Thanks!
