Her March 19, 2003 War Statement

Quote

As the nation prepares for war in Iraq, we must remember that war may be avoided until the moment the first shots are fired. It is still in the President’s power to chart a wiser course, and today I urge him to do so: Mr. President, call off this war!

All too often, war is an expression of failure. In this case, the diplomatic efforts of the United States have failed less because of the intransigence of other nations than because of the Administration’s lack of sincerity, patience or confidence in the rule of law.

In its rush to war, the Administration has obscured the goals, dissimulated the costs, disparaged our friends and allies and branded as unpatriotic ordinary Americans who pose legitimate questions. It has squandered the universal credit and sympathy America received after 9/11, and it has damaged our alliances and the United Nations.

The detestable nature of Saddam Hussein’s regime in Iraq is a matter of common knowledge, and if he is removed, no-one will shed any tears for him. I wish the Iraqi people the opportunity to determine their own destiny, and I pray that the ordeal of war they may be about to experience will, at least, yield them the chance to do so.

But a foreign policy that makes its moral arguments selectively, retroactively, and out of convenience is not a moral foreign policy. A war that is prosecuted under the conditions the President envisions is neither just nor justified. This unelected President has no constitutional authority to send Americans into harm’s way in pursuit of what President Carter has rightly termed a war of choice, not necessity. We still have a chance to step back. In a sincere and redoubled partnership with our allies, we can maintain the pressure on Iraq to comply with Resolution 1441 without softening our resolve.

In the days and weeks ahead, our first concern must be with the well-being of the men and women of our armed forces. I pray for their early and safe return. For their sake, for that of the nation, and for that of the world, we must continue to hold the Administration to the highest standards no matter the course it takes – in wartime and in its aftermath.

A presidential candidate who does not believe in the Electoral College or the Supreme Court
Illinois Senator Carol Moseley-Braun lashed out at President Bush in a bid to attract some desperately needed campaign cash. Asked about the passage of the latest round of Bush tax cuts, Moseley-Braun told Fox Radio network's Alan Colmes that the Bush plan was based on a lie.

Quote

"[Bush] can only keep a lie going for so long," the cash-strapped candidate complained, adding, "I think the truth will come out and the rubber will meet the road."

The desperate presidential hopeful then charged that Bush had been so far able to escape blame for a lagging economy because he has "a nice smile" and is "kind of cute."

Moments later Moseley-Braun was back on the attack, calling Bush an "unelected" president because he was "appointed by the United States Supreme Court."

A.K.A. Solicalism
From a March 22, 2003 letter, "Why I'm Qualified To Be President" in the Washington Post. Free college, free health care and a living wage that the government will determine is socialism, Senator.

Quote

I will work for universal health care, fully funded educational opportunity and a living wage for every worker.

No, you and your leftist friends did this
From the same letter:

Quote

It takes quite the statesman to turn world opinion from unanimity in our favor to 10 million people marching around the world against our policies. It takes pure genius to convince the world that the United States is a greater threat to peace than Iraq, Iran and North Korea combined.

Bush shows Orwellian leadership
Braun said the administration had offered the country Orwellian leadership on the economy, by:

"helping the greedy, fighting the needy."

Interview on PBS - Meet the Candidates March 3, 2003

Quote

I believe that this administration is on the absolute wrong track, particularly as regard to using the war on terror as a subterfuge, as a cloak, if you will, for what is really an extreme political agenda.

If the administration were to level with us and say, you know, this really is about oil, then we could have a better sense of whether or not the money that we're paying, the burdens that we're carrying ourselves alone in this case, whether it's worth all of that or whether or not there are smarter and more clever ways to do this.

The direction that this administration is taking is one of alienating and deprecating the, our allies around the world, not giving them support.

Bush Administration Using Our Pain
Braun criticized the Bush administration for failing to capture Osama bin Laden "all the while pandering to fear to keep us at war until the elections are over."

Quote

"This administration is using our pain out of 9-11 as a smoke screen for an extreme political agenda."

"We have gone into a war, an unelected president sending us into a war that the Congress frankly had no right, I believe, to authorize."

CAROL MOSELEY BRAUN: "The notion that we won the war against Iraq is like saying we won a war against Arizona. I mean, the fact of the matter is it's not that big of a country."

BOB EDWARDS: So you don't feel President Bush deserves any credit for anything accomplished in Iraq?

CAROL MOSELEY BRAUN: "Well, if you pick a fight with somebody that's smaller than you and you beat them, where's the honor in that? Does he deserve credit for winning the war? Well, better to have won it."
