I’M A SENIOR TRUMP OFFICIAL, AND I HOPE A LONG SHUTDOWN SMOKES OUT THE RESISTANCE

10:00 AM 01/14/2019 | OPINION

Senior Trump Official | Contributor

Daily Caller

Excerpt:

The Daily Caller is taking the rare step of publishing this anonymous op-ed at the request of the author, a senior official in the Trump administration whose identity is known to us and whose career would be jeopardized by its disclosure. We believe publishing this essay anonymously is the only way to deliver an important perspective to our readers. We invite you to submit a question about the essay or our vetting process here.

As one of the senior officials working without a paycheck, a few words of advice for the president’s next move at shuttered government agencies: lock the doors, sell the furniture, and cut them down.

Federal employees are starting to feel the strain of the shutdown. I am one of them. But for the sake of our nation, I hope it lasts a very long time, till the government is changed and can never return to its previous form.

The lapse in appropriations is more than a battle over a wall. It is an opportunity to strip wasteful government agencies for good.

On an average day, roughly 15 percent of the employees around me are exceptional patriots serving their country. I wish I could give competitive salaries to them and no one else. But 80 percent feel no pressure to produce results. If they don’t feel like doing what they are told, they don’t.

Why would they? We can’t fire them. They avoid attention, plan their weekend, schedule vacation, their second job, their next position — some do this in the same position for more than a decade.

<edit>

Saboteurs peddling opinion as research, tasking their staff on pet projects or pitching wasteful grants to their friends. Most of my career colleagues actively work against the president’s agenda. This means I typically spend about 15 percent of my time on the president’s agenda and 85 percent of my time trying to stop sabotage, and we have no power to get rid of them. Until the shutdown.

Due to the lack of funding, many federal agencies are now operating more effectively from the top down on a fraction of their workforce, with only select essential personnel serving national security tasks. One might think this is how government should function, but bureaucracies operate from the bottom up — a collective of self-generated ideas. Ideas become initiatives, formalize into offices, they seek funds from Congress and become bureaus or sub-agencies, and maybe one day grow to be their own independent agency, like ours. The nature of a big administrative bureaucracy is to grow to serve itself. I watch it and fight it daily. (RELATED: Remember When Obama And Clinton Shut Down Government For Their Own Pet Projects?)

When the agency is full, employees held liable for poor performance respond with threats, lawsuits, complaints and process in at least a dozen offices, taking years of mounting paperwork with no fear of accountability, extending their careers, while no real work is done. Do we succumb to such extortion? Yes. We pay them settlements, we waive bad reviews, and we promote them.

Many government agencies have adopted the position that more complaints are good because it shows inclusion in, you guessed it, the process. When complaints come, it is cheaper to pay them off than to hold public servants accountable. The result: People accused of serious offenses are not charged, and self-proclaimed victims are paid by you, the American taxpayer.

The message to federal supervisors is clear. Maintain the status quo, or face allegations. Many federal employees truly believe that doing tasks more efficiently and cutting out waste, by closing troubled programs instead of expanding them, “is morally wrong,” as one cried to me.

I get it. These are their pets. It is tough to put them down and let go, and many resist. This phenomenon was best summed up by a colleague who said, “The goal in government is to do nothing. If you try to get things done, that’s when you will run into trouble.”

But President Trump can end this abuse. Senior officials can reprioritize during an extended shutdown, focus on valuable results and weed out the saboteurs. We do not want most employees to return, because we are working better without them. Sure, we empathize with families making tough financial decisions, like mine, and just like private citizens who have to find other work and bring competitive value every day, while paying more than a third of their salary in federal taxes.

President Trump has created more jobs in the private sector than the furloughed federal workforce. Now that we are shut down, not only are we identifying and eliminating much of the sabotage and waste, but we are finally working on the president’s agenda.

President Trump does not need Congress to address the border emergency, and yes, it is an emergency. Billions upon billions of hard-earned tax dollars are still being dumped into foreign aid programs every year that do nothing for America’s interest or national security. The president does not need congressional funding to deconstruct abusive agencies who work against his agenda. This is a chance to effect real change, and his leverage grows stronger every day the shutdown lasts.

Don't think of it as a "shutdown". It's more like the usurption of thousands of little god-kings.

This is exactly how it is in any large company, especially when it's family run.

Certain employees do absolutely nothing while others pick up the slack and the do nothings get promotions and raises while the people carrying the load and doing the work get told that there isn't any money in the budget for a raise.

Government is even worse because, as the author states, they CAN'T be fired because of all the internal bureaucracy that prevents them from getting rid of useless employees who do nothing and get paid well for defrauding their employer.

Thanks to the quotas, the unions and the ridiculous garbage that they foist on employers, good employees get burned out because they do three times the work while their co-workers sit around doing nothing with impunity and they know that all they have to do is make threats and they get what they want while the good employee how does his job and three other people's jobs as well, keeps his head down because someone could complain about him and get him fired.

The rules regarding employment need to change across the board so that good employees don't get burned out and they can be rewarded with raises for their hard work while the useless should be fired outright and have no recourse when they have been terminated because they are not fulfilling this job duties.

That the government is SO hogtied by these users and wastrels that devour our tax dollars to pay them for doing nothing should make everyone furious.

And, yes, the media and unions are all making a big thing about the shutdown to get their way, and to divert the attention from this very problem.

Hats off the to the author as well as the newspaper for honoring the request to remain anonymous.

Our local Coast Guard members are not getting paid. I guess they're just a bunch worthless whiners that the right believes are most government workers.

https://13wham.com/news/local/local-coast-guard-members-feeling-effects-of-government-shutdown

If I didn't get for four weeks, with no end in sight, I'd have to dip into the retirement savings.

One - that does not refute this author’s point.

Two - do you think private sector people haven’t been laid off and had to dip into retirement savings?

Laid off is not the same thing as working with no pay. The essential workers, like TSA screeners and air traffic controllers are working without pay and are not eligible for unemployment, as far as I know. Even if they are, unemployment pay sucks. Belive me I know.

This situation is not of their making.

But, they will get paid. eventually. They're not working for "no pay". They're working and pay is deferred. They know this, the news knows this, and you might even get it. So, they take out a loan for a few weeks to bridge the gap. Think they might figure that out?

Gee, if Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi would only do the jobs that they were elected to do, your local Coast Guard would get paid.

But we don't want to blame Chuck and Nancy....It's all President Trump

The first sentence is exactly correct: Laid off is not the same thing as working with no pay. It's much worse. These government employees will get their pay. Laid off people are no longer making any money at all, regardless whether collected now or in the future.

Your final sentence is correct too: The situation is not of their making. The blame lies directly at the feet of the Democrats, for whom American security and safety will never be as important as preventing President Trump from getting any "win", no matter how crucial to national security that "win" is.

And I've been on unemployment too.

As has been pointed out, the will get paid. Even the people furloughed and not working will get paid for the time they weren't working. I was when I was furloughed.

That being said, have you noticed that the there are a ton of jobs out there? If they don't want the inconveniences that come from working in government service, no one is stopping them from finding another job.

I have an idea...how about the Democrats fund border security like they have been saying for decades they want to do instead of playing political football with it. If I were furloughed, I would be pretty pissed off at those asshats like Pelosi who are on film calling for stronger border security, including barriers. This is a Dem. Congress Shutdown!!!

How long can you go without paying the mortgage or car insurance before getting threatened with being cut off? Car insurance is most important. Next is medicine and food. Take out a loan for a few weeks? Who besides a loan shark will hand over money to someone who’s not getting a regular paycheck?

A few bad apples mean they're all worthless?

It's just as generic and broad as THIS STUPID statement.

If they've caught several hundred, how many do you suppose haven't been caught? Or are you really as stupid as you come across?

So they should quit. Who will our government get to replace them if the position won’t pay until the impasse is over?

When a person’s arguments descend into name calling and personal attacks, it’s clear they have nothing worthwhile to say. Tell you what, since this is all you have been able manage for the past few months, I will put you on ignore from here on out.

Capiche?

I have plenty. I just don't think trying to argue or convince someone so partisanly stupid is worthwhile. I'd rather simply point out your obtuseness and hypocrisy at every turn.

Isn't that the government's problem to find a solution to since they caused the problem?

I'm just pointing out that the people you are weeping for have options.
