How Far Left Will The Democrats Lurch In 2020?

PJ Media

By Rick Moran

February 2, 2019

Excerpt:

It seems a foregone conclusion that the Democrats will choose a radical leftist to lead them in the 2020 presidential contest. If not an avowed socialist like Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren, then it will be someone who espouses their pet issues.

In fact, candidates who try to pass themselves off as "moderate" are rethinking their plans to enter the race.

Axios:

The rising Democratic enthusiasm for big government liberalism is forcing a trio of leading 2020 contenders to rethink jumping in, several sources tell Axios.

What's happening: Michael Bloomberg and former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, each of whom were virtual locks to run, are having serious second thoughts after watching Democrats embrace "Medicare for All," big tax increases and the Green New Deal. Joe Biden, who still wants to run, is being advised to delay any plans to see how this lurch to the left plays out. If Biden runs, look for Bloomberg and McAuliffe to bow out, the sources tell us.

  • The Democratic attacks on Howard Schultz, after he said he was considering an independent bid, reflect the current party's limited appetite for moderation.

  • In "Schultz Derangement Syndrome," conservative N.Y. Times columnist Bret Stephens wrote: "[T]he neuralgic reaction to his bid says something about the ideological drift of the Democratic Party."

Iowa polling by a prominent 2020 hopeful found that the Democratic electorate has moved sharply left.

  •
  • For instance, the polling found that "socialism" had a net positive rating, while "capitalism" had a net negative rating.

Bloomberg is going ahead with expensive preparations for a campaign: He directed his staff to prepare a launch plan for him, after he received an encouraging response from a business audience in Northern Virginia 10 days ago.

  •
  • Kevin Sheekey, his close adviser, was spotted in Washington yesterday on a recruitment mission for campaign talent.

  • If Bloomberg ran, he would argue that no candidate in the race has done more to save the environment and support gun control.

What does it say about the Democratic Party's lurch to the left that Joe Biden is considered a "moderate"?

Wow, when even Bloomberg & McAuliffe are reconsidering because of the leftward lurch, and even Joe-Freakin-Biden (the automatic gaffe-dispenser) is considered a "moderate" by comparison, you know the leftist lunatics really are in charge of the Democrat asylum. So I'm kinda torn between two possible reactions: Elation and terror.

1 - Elation, because with the Democrat candidate charging THAT far to left, it just strikes me as impossible that American voters could be THAT stupid and elect him/her. Four more years of prosperity and success with President Trump! Hooray!

...but...

2 - Horror, because don't forget Obama. Sure, I could understand how he fooled enough people to get elected the first time. But after four looooooooooooong years of his ineptitude, dishonesty, racism, condescension, disasters, etc, the American voters WERE stupid enough to RE-elect him!!! And the left has only gotten even more insane and infantile since the 2016 election. So by no means is it "impossible" that one of their truly-lunatic leftist sh*t-for-brains might actually win. And that possibility is truly horrifying.

Look at how the Mainstream Media is distorting Donald Trump's presidency in reverse and you get how they distorted Barrack Obama's presidency. CNN bozo Chris Mathews' pissing down his leg?! Nothing ever but softball questions, even after the open mike slip-up to Putin's guy about having more flexibility. Sadly, Fake News plays a huge role in peoples' perception of what's going on in Washington.

Oh Monty, can't believe you left out:

3. The continuing braying of the MSM against the "bad orange man" and nothing but positive for anyone NOT the 'bad orange man'.

I am not over confident about them losing in 2020 no matter how batspit crazy their candidate it. Just look at the midterms...economy going well, jobs up, unemployment down, stock market up, trade deals, etc. but the idiot voters went and handed the House to the Democrats, including several completely nutcase "socialists." That's in quotes because they are at heart radical neo-Marxists.

As H.L. Mencken said, democracy is the system where the average voter is assumed to know what he wants and deserves to get it good and hard.

The race for the nomination will be a race to the left. Senator Sanders's supporter believe, and with good reason, that the DNC leaders cheated their candidate out of a fair chance at the 2016 nomination. If they cannot get Sanders nominated in 2020, they will switch to the farthest-left substitute such as Senator Warren. That is why other candidates such as loony leftistt Kamala Harris are proposing things like abolition of private medical insurance. That is why all of the Democratic candidates thus far, including "I'm Spartacus" Booker, have endorsed single-payer medical finance. The successful candidate will have to stand out from the pack by going even farther left with proposals like Fauxcahontas's wealth tax. Having lost the 2016 election by losing the Electoral College even though Clinton won the popular majority, they will propose to abolish the Electoral College.

The general election is a different matter. The Democratic nominee will have to court the swing voters, whose political interests are far more centrist than the Bernie Bros or the pussy-hat crowd. Tell them that Uncle Sugar is going to give them free medical care and they cheer, but when you tell them how much "free" medical care is going to cost them, their enthusiasm melts away. Try to explain proportional representation voting to them and their eyes glaze over. Tell them that you want "comprehensive immigration reform" and they automatically realize you mean amnesty for illegal aliens, past, present and future.

Hence, the danger for the Democrats is that the platform which will win a candidate the nomination is likely to cost him or her the general election. If the Democrat nominee wins the general election, he or she will immediately need to start breaking every campaign promise he or she made and blame it on recalcitrant Republicans. "We proposed 'Medicare For All' but those awful Republicans stopped us because they want you to die. And, what about the children? Won't somebody please think about the children?"

I’m worried too but hopeful that a dragged out democrat primary will have the terms “socialism”, “high taxes”, “economic downturn”, and “illegal immigrants” sufficiently often mentioned that even the dumbest of the dumb get it. This will end up being a presidential election pitting socialism versus capitalism, about in as clear cut a way as ever been seen.

Of course, there’s the media, who are going to act against their own best interests and go full socialist. They’ll do this, not understanding that socialism will dry up the economy, and thus advertising dollars, and thus their own jobs. And it’ll dry up their plan b jobs too, as restaurants will start closing and unemployment will go up. But hey, we gotta protect those illegals and give everyone free everything!

One of the problems is we have far, far too many people in this country who vote based on whether they like the person. Obama, lord I hated his smug, obsequious, look down his nose manner, but a lot of people thought he was tingle worthy. Trump, I love what he's accomplishing, and I don't vote or base my approval on whether or not I like the person, I base it on their policies and what they do. But there are too many who will glom on to the non-stop Two Minutes Hate who won't vote for him because he's bombastic and rough edged. I know a woman who says he makes her skin crawl and wouldn't vote for him in a million years despite the fact his economy and policies benefit her. There are far too many out there like her, how else do you explain the nutcases and their fawning over Beto?

Personally? I loathe all politicians, as the guy said in Hunt For Red October (the movie), whenever a politician isn't kissing babies he's stealing their lollipops. They are all sociopathic narcissistic scum at best, you only hope you can get one who halfway does what they say they're going to do, even if by accident. I wouldn't want to sit down and have a beer with any of them.

Congressman Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) has thrown her lei into the ring next to Senator Warren's war bonnet, so I looked up her stand on the issues. She doesn't have any. In announcing her candidacy, the Hill reports,

The Hawaii lawmaker pointed to her service in the state's Army National Guard as a reason for her desire to seek public office. "It is this principle of service above self, that is at the heart of every soldier," Gabbard told a cheering crowd. "At the heart of every service number. And it is in this spirit, that today I announce my candidacy for President of the United States of America."

I suppose service in the National Guard is patriotic. It is at least better than claiming "I'm Spartacus" because you abused a Supreme Court nominee or a silly claim of Cherokee ancestry based on nothing. Or "Vote for me, I'm black (or female, or Hispanic, or homosexual)."

The reason I expect the Democratic candidates to offer nothing but low-content slogans like "Hope & Change", at once both puffy and vacuous, is that the only thing which distinguishes most of them from each other is their slogans.

Regarding the “voting based on likability”, I wish you were wrong, I’m afraid you’re exactly right. How to combat that? Whenever someone brings up “Trump had sex with a hooker”, I ask, how’s your pocketbook? How’s your employment future looking? Do you like the judges and justices being nominated? Do you like what we have better than AOC’s socialist utopia?

I know that 80-90% of the time the answer is “I just couldn’t vote for a scumbag like Trump”. So they’ll take a chance on someone else who PROBABLY is a worse scumbag than than a hooker-banging inflated-ego dude. All because they don’t fully KNOW yet that the guy or gal they’ll be voting for will actually cause their families to suffer. But at least we prevented that jerk Trump from gloating.

(It’s so similar to this leadup to the super bowl. Everyone NOT from New England is saying Go Rams. Yet the hat tipping as an outsider should go to an organization that’s gone to 9 superbowls in 17 years. No, to all you Pats haters, what I say there is a logically true statement, if you remove your emotion from it. The media is fully against NE. I have no skin in the fight, not sure if I’ll watch, but if the Pats win, it’s not gonna ruin my day, I’ll state that for damn sure. If the Rams win, same thing. But I digress.)

How Far Left Will The Democrats Lurch In 2020?

How far?

Who suggested the following?

- Limitation of private property through progressive taxation, heavy inheritance taxes

- Confiscation of the possessions of all emigrants

- Organization of labor or employment of proletarians on publicly owned land, in factories and workshops, with competition among the workers being abolished and with the factory owners, in so far as they still exist, being obliged to pay the same high wages as those paid by the state

- Increase in the number of national factories

- Education of all children, from the moment they can leave their mother’s care, in national establishments at national cost

- Construction, on public lands, of great palaces as communal dwellings for associated groups of citizens engaged in both industry and agriculture

- Concentration of all means of transportation in the hands of the nation

If you guessed Karl Marx, you're correct. These suggestions were taken from his "Manifesto of the Communist Party". If you guessed the Democratic Socialist Platform, you would also be correct. Many of these suggestions are also included in the Democrat Party Platform.

Is there a moderate democrat even thinking about running? Can’t count Shultz, he is thinking of running as an independent.

If Mitt Romney decided to run as an independent, these same democrats would call it a great idea, would call Trump insulting names for criticizing Romney, and would get the media to cover the topic 24/7. But I digress.

You're both right, of course, but I include that as part of my conclusion about voter stupidity. Objective, intelligent people don't fall for the MSM-crafted lies about Trump being a "racist" and/or "misogynist" and/or whatever. You really have to be an idiot to fall for that kind of bullsh*t.

Anyone who wins the Democrat nomination always has a very good shot at being president and should never be underestimated, no matter how far left they are, especially in the post-Obama era.

Progressive/socialism is a mental disease which is relentless. They never get enough of it and every gain they make just fuels their lust for power. Historically it always ends in dictatorship. Our Founding Fathers analyzed political thought and classic philosophy in the crafting of the Declaration of Independence and later the Constitution. No one has matched their accomplishments.

In contrast modern Conservatives are politically classic Liberals who view government as a potentially dangerous force which must be constantly monitored so that individual liberty is preserved and held dear.
