Conservatives love big government if it's in service of targeting those they dislike or are unwelcome.

One of government's primary responsibilities is the protection of citizen rights and safety. Every one who enters the country without legal permission is a potential threat to MY safety and security as a citizen.

If that fits your definition of objectionable "big government" then so be it. . . .

Conservatives like the government when it pursues criminals. Wow, what a newsflash.

Imagine that?

You say that like it's a "bad" thing...

Right.

In China they’re using this technology to identify and ticket jay walkers. Fun times ahead.

Is jaywalking against the law? If not, then maybe you have some sort of point. But if it is, then what's your point?

Not exactly. Conservatives would like the rule of law to prevail. And if the law is a bad law, like slavery, and yes, abortion, we would like those laws changed. However, we do not don black masks, or even white hoods like the democrats did at one point, and fight in the streets. Conservatives, mostly, protest in peaceful manners. And also in most case, unlike the left, pick up our trash once the protest is over.

So no, that is not liking "big government" like the left uses big government to achieve its goals in taking from the doers and giving it to the takers.

Illegal immigration is, well, illegal. It is a drain on our system and needs to be addressed. These people crashing our border are not asylum seekers. They are coming here for the opportunity America provides. Which most, if not all, conservatives have no problem with as long as they do so legally. This illegal crap has gotten out of control and needs to be addressed.

The left have blatantly abused government power to illegally go after and personally destroy conservatives and their businesses.

You ARE aware that we have a documented, legal immigration policy and procedure for people to follow who want to come here permanently, right?

I want my government to be just big enough to manage that policy. If it requires more walls, camps, and agents because Democrats aren't interested in working on solutions, so be it.

What exactly is the Democrat policy on immigration these days? It isn't what we have on the books, so, please, enlighten me...

ICE Has Been Mining DMV Databases Using Facial Recognition For Years

By David Gilbert Jul 8, 2019

Tens of millions of U.S. citizens have had their faces scanned by the FBI and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) without their knowledge or consent, according to new documents collected by researchers at Georgetown Law.

Shared with the Washington Post and the New York Times, the documents reveal that between 2014 and 2017, the agencies mined the databases of the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in states across the country, sometimes with as little as an emailed request to a DMV employee.

The records show how facial recognition technology has already become an integral part of daily law enforcement activity in the U.S. is being used to track down suspects in low-level crimes like cashing a stolen check and petty theft.

The use of this unofficial surveillance infrastructure has never been authorized by Congress or any State legislature, and advocates say running facial recognition searches against databases of millions of law-abiding citizens is a serious breach of privacy.

"This is a scandal," Harrison Rudolph, a researcher at Georgetown Law told the New York Times. "States have never passed laws authorizing ICE to dive into driver's license databases using facial recognition to look for folks."

<snip>

According to a report from the Government Accountability Office published last month, 21 states allow the FBI to scan DMV databases. Since 2011, the FBI has logged more than 390,000 facial-recognition searches of federal and local databases, including DMV databases, according to the same report.

The documents gathered by Georgetown Law researchers mark the first known instance of ICE using facial recognition technology to scan state driver's license databases, including photos of legal residents and citizens.

The records show that in Utah, Vermont and Washington State, all of which offer driving licenses or permits to undocumented immigrants, ICE officials have requested to comb through state repositories of license photos. Officials in Utah and Vermont complied, while Washington State required a court order.

"The state has told [undocumented immigrants], has encouraged them, to submit that information. To me, it's an insane breach of trust to then turn around and allow ICE access to that," said Clare Garvie, a senior associate with Georgetown Law's Center on Privacy and Technology, who led the research.

"These states have never told undocumented people that when they apply for a driver's license they are also turning over their face to ICE," Rudolph said. "That is a huge bait and switch.

The documents don't reveal if the ICE search requests have directly resulted in the deportation of undocumented immigrants, and a spokesperson for the agency told the New York Times said he could not comment on "investigative techniques, tactics or tools" because of "law-enforcement sensitivities."

But, he added, "during the course of an investigation, ICE has the ability to collaborate with external local, federal and international agencies to obtain information that may assist in case completion and subsequent prosecution. This is an established procedure that is consistent with other law enforcement agencies."

<snip>

At a hearing in May, Republican and Democratic members of the House Oversight and Reform Committee slammed the use of facial recognition technology and voiced support for passing federal laws to limit its use.

The committee's ranking Republican, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), compared the use of facial recognition to George Orwell's dystopian novel "1984." "Seems to me it's time for a timeout," Jordan said. "Doesn't matter what side of the political spectrum you're on, this should concern us all."

So let me get this straight, you had no problem when the government monitored the calls / emails and what not of the Trump campaign, because you know TRUMMMMPPP! Orange Man Bad!! They illegally unmasked his people but you blinked nary an eye in the direction of that information. Yet now you are concerned, deeply concerned that this same process is used to "spy" on millions of American's and using that information to arrest those who are breaking the law?

So either as a leftists you are in support of the concept of being able to monitor the people or you are not. Which is it, because you can't have it both ways. If I had my way this entire database would be destroyed and the surveillance state would be rendered completely incapable of collecting a damn thing. As far as illegals, they all need to be deported period.

First they came for the 'illegals'..

The "illegals" should never have been here to be "came for"... They should be LEGALLY in their nation of birth and apply legally if they want to come here. Just like my wife and I did for her. Visa and green card first, then citizenship. That's how it works, its not impossible, nor difficult as long as you didn't do something illegal.

Right.

In China they're using this technology to identify and ticket jay walkers. Fun times ahead.

You can thank Google for that. Still want that monopoly untouched?

Really? Who called for "government run healthcare"? Oh that's right that ultra-conservative Obama! Who called for the "green new deal" Oh that's right that NEO-CON AOC. Who called for government run everything? Oh yeah that Lion of conservatism Bernie Sanders. Man have I been on the wrong team!

Yes because we have this thing called the Constitution, it's kind of a rule book for us the people. Unless of course you continue to vote for people that want to tear that document down that is. IF they start using markers to change We the People and instead start calling it "we the property" of the United States of America, Then we are all screwed. But you guys with your God killing arguments are the problem here. Justice does not mean what you feel it should mean today. Justice means equal in the eye's of the Law.

Social justice indicates a whim. Gays are more important than straight, blacks more than whites, hispanics more than blacks etc. That's nonsense. ALL PEOPLE ARE EQUAL, and endowed with inalienable rights. That's where it starts and ends. Fairness is just another word for "lets change the rules". Stop changing the rules and you will be satisfied with the results because they will balance out.

Any evidence to back up your paranoia?

Well, I guess there was that one time 0-bama used the IRS and Lois Lerner to spy on Americans groups exercising their 1st A. rights.

I guess, any evidence from someone you don't agree with?

Notice the dates, it started under Obama and ended in 2017. Also, Republican Jim Jordan is the only congressman condemning the actions. Drivers license information has been used forever in gathering information on citizens. That's why photos were added in the first place.

It's another Georgetown Law nothing burger.

Ridiculous and offensive Nazi comparisons aside, this really isn't a big deal. They have been able to search those databases to locate criminals for years. The only difference is they are searching the photo file rather than the name attached to the photo. In the past, if they knew a Juan Carlos Muniz was an illegal, they would have searched the databases for that name to see what they could find. Now, if they have a photo of Juan, they search for matching photos. You have no expectation of privacy from the government when it comes to government documents.

There, there, lefties. Just concentrate on how maybe this can be one of the tools you can use to find illegals to present them with full-ride, citizen-funded health care!

It will also help out if Juan Carlos Muniz has a few more identities, Juan Muniz Carlos, Carlos Juan Muniz, Carlos Muniz Juan, Muniz Juan Carlos and MunizCarlos Juan, and the welfare cards that go with the extra identities.

So much for individual liberty in the country of one's citizenship. . . .

Or the right to privacy. . .

ETA: What does this have to do with the ICE tactics?
