A Utah substitute told fifth graders that ‘homosexuality is wrong.’ She was escorted out after 3 students spoke up

When it was finally his turn to answer, the fifth grade boy knew exactly what he wanted to say.

It was the week before Thanksgiving, and the substitute teacher had asked the boy’s class: “What are you thankful for this year?” Some of the kids had said turkey and mashed potatoes. One girl mentioned her dog. Another student joked about not having to go to school over the holiday.

The boy’s response was a bit more serious. “I’m thankful that I’m finally going to be adopted by my two dads,” he answered.

Students later said that the substitute snapped, “Why on earth would you be happy about that?”

For the next 10 minutes she lectured the 30 kids in the class about her own views, how “homosexuality is wrong” and “two men living together is a sin.” She looked at the boy, too, and told him: “That’s nothing to be thankful for.”

Three girls asked her to stop multiple times. But she continued, so they walked out of the room to get the principal.

As the substitute was escorted out of the building, she was still arguing, trying to make her point, the boy’s fathers say they were told by school officials.

“She also tried to blame our son,” said one of the boy’s dads, Louis van Amstel, “and told him that it was his fault that she went off.”

The incident occurred last week at Deerfield Elementary School in Cedar Hills, which sits in the northern part of Utah County. Van Amstel and his husband, Josh, said administrators called them immediately after it happened. At first, their son, who’s 11 years old, didn’t want to talk about it and didn’t want to get the substitute teacher in trouble. The school pieced the story together from multiple student accounts. And the incident is now under investigation.

Alpine School District spokesman David Stephenson said he cannot speak about personnel issues but noted that “appropriate action has been taken.”

I know, right?

I picture her yelling “HIGH GLORY!” like aunt Esther, when they were escorting her from the school.

Good on those girls for sticking up for their classmate.

While I don't agree with what this teacher did, do you agree with forcing school children to write gay love letters, act out mock gay marriage proposals? Just wondering?

Put me in the "not" category. I mean, as a Christian, I care about the pervasiveness of various evils. I just don't agree with it. I just don't. (Unless it's two women and I can watch, but maybe that's a different topic, LOL).

"just nod your head and move on to the next student."

No. We've been doing that for how many years and, in my best Dr. Phil voice, "how has THAT worked out for ya?

Speak out! you got to speak out against the madness

You got to speak your mind if you dare

Unfortunately the "them" in this case was a vulnerable child, who was expressing joy on finally having a family.

LB, you should know by now that the opinions about homosexuality are split here on RN. So I hope your purpose isn’t to try to generalize a few comments onto everyone.

Regarding the article itself specifically, the teacher behaved poorly. But I’m a bit suspicious. How many 11-yo’s will say that aloud to the teacher? I’m not ready to buy this story as written. It seems to perfectly choreographed. I’d like further proof that the (female) teacher really is such a jerk. It just doesn’t fit, without further proof. It comes across as an attempt to rile up two opposing sides, with one already declared the loser jerk side.

It's almost 2020. Why wouldn't he? By November the whole class would know of his situation, and she asked "what are you grateful for?".

If it is a hoax, the school and the students would have to be in on it. Nothing's impossible though..

I don't necessarily disagree with you; however this is no different then the whack jobs screaming about global warming. It is one thing to discuss this with adults, it is another thing to lecture children in school like this. What was she going to accomplish acting like a nut job in front of kids?

Sorry the response is so many hours later. I had read it some time ago and didn't have time to look for it earlier.

The classroom is neither the time nor the place to espouse personal social or political views, period. Regardless of whether those views are Right or Left.

When in doubt, keep your mouth shut on such matters. Your job is to teach reading, writing, and 'rithmetic, as the saying goes.

ok thanks. So this was in the UK and, unless I'm mistaken, is a private school that has a curriculum the parents approve.

The lesson isn't the first of its kind. In fact, according to BBC, the school is known for being LGBTQ friendly – recently winning the pro-LGBT "Educate and Celebrate" Best Practice Gold Award, which is awarded to schools that tackle "homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying."

They also have a gender-neutral uniform policy.

The video got backlash on Facebook, many expressing anger, frustration and concern over forcing children to endorse LGTBQ relationships from an early age.

Where is the objections coming from, parents of students or people on social media?

I think it's wrong, but iffn I were the teacher, I'd probably have said that some people (the majority) don't think it's right to do, but some think otherwise.

IF the description in the opening article is accurate, then this substitute teacher was way out of line.

I was an adopted kid so I know a little bit about this. There are a lot of kids wanting to be adopted into a loving home. I highly doubt these guys would try to recruit the kid. A good life with people who love them and raise them up right is all any kid wants.

School is supposed to be a place of education, first and foremost.

They took prayer out of public schools to preserve the division between church and state.

They need to take forced agendas out of public schools as well.

They should concentrate on teaching children how to read, write, add, subtract, the basics.

They should NOT be incorporation sexual lifestyle education into the curriculum at any level, especially in the lower grades, because that is not education, that is indoctrination.

We have seen textbooks chopped up and edited to fit an agenda, and that agenda is NOT educating children in a well rounded way, it is to allow them to only know what a select and one sided group wants them to know, which, again, is NOT education, it is indoctrination.

Substitute teachers are temporary, but the problem in the public school system is a constant.

So would you have an objection to a school objecting to gay marriage and using it as part of their curriculum?

If it was a US public school, yes I would object. Private schools can teach whatever they want. There are private religious schools which exclude and expel students whose parents are gay. I think it’s messed up, but then I wouldn’t send my kid to one with those rules.
