A second suspect has been identified after a gunman linked to a far-right extremist movement fired a rifle from a van and killed a federal security officer in Oakland, authorities said Tuesday.

Robert Alvin Justus Jr., 30, of Millbrae, was allegedly driving the van when David Patrick Underwood, a Federal Protective Service officer, and his partner were shot with an AR-15 type rifle outside the Oakland federal courthouse on May 29 while protests unfolded around the city.

Days later on June 6, his alleged accomplice, 32-year-old Steven Carrillo, is accused of shooting two Santa Cruz County deputies outside his home in Ben Lomond, killing Sgt. Damon Gutzwiller.

Both Justus and Carrillo have been arrested and charged in federal court, prosecutors said. Carrillo also faces charges in state court in connection with the killing of Gutzwiller.

David Anderson, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of California, announced the new details at a press conference Tuesday alongside authorities from the FBI and other agencies.

Anderson confirmed that Carrillo, a sergeant with the U.S. Air Force, is believed to be an associated with the “Boogaloo” movement, an extremist ideology with followers who identify as militia and seek to incite a violent uprising.

Authorities found a ballistics vest in a vehicle registered to Carrillo that had a patch on it with a Boogaloo symbol described as an altered American flag.

While fleeing the deputy shooting June 6, Carrillo allegedly used his own blood to write phrases associated with the movement on one of the vehicles he carjacked, Anderson said.

Authorities also said the white van used in the Oakland shooting was the same vehicle found in Ben Lomond with bomb-making equipment inside.

“Pat Underwood was murdered because he wore a uniform,” Anderson said. “In announcing the charges today we are reaffirming our commitment to protect those who protect us.”

Jack Bennett, FBI special agent in charge of the San Francisco Division, said the suspects chose to attack in Oakland that night because law enforcement was busy responding to protests.

“Carrillo elected to travel to Oakland to conduct this murder and take advantage of a time when this nation was mourning the death of George Floyd,” Bennett said.

“There is no evidence that these men had any intention to join the demonstration in Oakland,” he added. “They came to Oakland to kill cops.”

Now do David Dorn!

By the way, I have yet to hear from you or any of the other black lives matter supporters on this board concerning my question about the lives of the little children that Terrence K. Williams brought forth that have been killed and if their lives mattered.  Why aren’t people protesting those deaths?  There were no riots or looting when they were slaughtered.  I imagine there will be a black death in Detroit or Chicago or St. Louis today, but it will most likely be at the hands of another black criminal, so it will again go unnoticed by all but their immediate family and perhaps local media.  Not a word from the Rev Al, I’m sure.

Neo-NAZI groups are not far right. They are socialist / marxist in their belief systems. As far as these scum, they deserve the not-a-death penalty that Commifornia can give them. How does this change the fact that BLM and ANTIFA are still actively destroying places around the US (both marxist / socialist) themselves?

I was going to point that out as well, but I know that Ladybird would never be able to understand the ideology that they share with this group. Same ideology, just different method to accomplish those goals.

It's all about racism with her all the time. Whether they are marxist racists, (left wing) or anarchist racists (ultra-right wing) when viewed in the political spectrum that matters (which is how much power a government has over its people) Marxists, socialist, communist, Flying Spaghetti Monster-ists are all left wing, they want government control. Anarchists are ultra right, they want no government control. Most of us are somewhere near the middle wanting some government control to deny destruction of the society, while keeping that power in check to avoid coercion.

I'm not familiar  which "what about" subject you are referring to. I have never expressed any affinity for "Rev Al" or Antifa.  In this current chaos, I was one of the first here that brought up this group as probable participants in the increasingly violent protests.

No one seems to have any thought on the shootings of the officers in this case.

Its called an investigation, in order for you to become aware of anything, people of action must investigate the situation and determine the culprit. Then those people of words come out and make people of inaction like yourself aware of the situation. So you can then claim you were aware of it. All of this boils down to police work, good honest police work by good cops who don't deserve the crap people you support are dumping on them.

But you already knew that didn't you?

Exactly, NEO-Nazi socialists and anarchists. They run a big gammit, they are all looking forward to the upcoming race war they believe should be here soon. They are the insane clown posse in the white community and we must get rid of this faction of stupidity.

Those violent protests are called riots and they are started by those that follow your ideology :)

You only care about the officers in this case because you think the shooters are far right, when in reality they are of the same ideology as you, BLM and Antifa :)

You beat me to it, Taggart. And I see several others also agree. These thugs are no more "conservative" than Antifa is, and trying to associate them with the political right is beneath contempt.

"No one"? So you haven't actually read your own thread? Well I'll add one more:

Any shooting of police officers is despicable and indefensible, regardless who or "what" the shooter is or thinks he/she "represents". Race, color, ethnicity, gender, age, political beliefs, religious beliefs, etc...NONE of that matters. If you shoot a cop you're scum. Lower than scum.

I’m not surprised once again you ignore facts claiming no one had any opinion on the killing of these officers. That is a blatant lie. I am surprised for once you aren’t defending the criminals. Is it because they are white? That’s it it’s once again a race issue isn’t it?

You are being persistently obtuse or intentionally ignorant.  First of all, many people have “thoughts” on the shooting of these officers.  They have expressed them here in this thread.  The far-right crazies, neo-nazies and any of the other groups trying to destroy America all belong in the same group – they are scum.  As is BLM, that has piggybacked on a social justice cause to gain power so it can destroy America as we know it and rebuild it in its own warped image.

Second, I have brought up the lives of the many black lives killed in the urban cities over and over and over and I know you have been on those threads but you have ignored them.  Maybe you weren’t on the thread when I linked to the Williams post.  However, they are NOT “what abouts.”  How disgusting!  They were people – children – with lives before them and families who loved them and they were killed, and no one protested in the street for them.  I have brought up time and time again that there are black lives taken every-single-day in Chicago and St. Louis and Baltimore and Detroit but they are not taken by white cops, so no one makes a “Federal Case” of it.

BLM loves it when little Black babies are chopped up and sucked out of the womb prior to or during birth. They also are happy for the government to replace fathers in Black families. BLM also eschews everything Martin Luther King fought for. The 1776 Project with the help of ALL Conservatives will eventually reach the goals of racial harmony.

BLM also on their goal list wants to get rid of fathers in the home. You know because it is good for the country or something. Best thing to see is a daddy with his son teaching him how to be a man. I am seeing that more and more in the black community and it's only going to make the kids stronger and more resilient in the future. 2 things the DNC and BLM don't want. They need soy boy beta males so their LGBTQRE##$S#RST lifestyles can be promoted.

"Air Force Sergeant" is somehow relevant in the reporting.   As in overtly militant, military person, who is a sample of all military people, committed heinous acts using an "AR-15 like" assault weapon that should be banned (even though it's no less deadly than a Kentucky Long Rifle,) and that he learned how to use in the military that only teaches our young people violence,  along with his "right wing" militant friend......Guess I'm wrong but I always thought Anarchists were apolitical, non voters who don't participate in our political process because they don't want to be governed by anyone. How about just reporting bad guys shoot good guys killing one of the good guys.  Or just criminals killed law abiding citizen who showed up to work, like he did everyday, to serve his community and make the world a safer place for everyone. I hope they get the maximum the law allows.
