John Bolton Exclusive Interview: Trump Does Not Represent The Republican Cause That I Want To Back

The Telegraph

21 June 2020

Excerpt:

As a lifelong Republican who has held high office in the Reagan and both Bush administrations, John Bolton, Donald Trump’s former National Security Advisor, is not someone who normally considers voting Democrat.

Yet, such is the strength of the 71-year-old Washington veteran’s disaffection with Mr Trump’s presidency, that this is precisely how he intends to cast his vote in November’s U.S. presidential election. Rather than voting for the president he served for 17 months as National Security Advisor until his resignation last year, Mr Bolton says he intends to vote for Joe Biden, the Democratic candidate.

“In 2016 I voted for Trump over Hillary Clinton,” he said. “Now, having seen this president up close, I cannot do this again. My concern is for the country, and he does not represent the Republican cause that I want to back.”

Speaking exclusively to the Daily Telegraph prior to publication of his scathing book on the Trump presidency, The Room Where It Happened, Mr Bolton insisted that, by casting his vote for Mr Biden, he was not betraying his Republican roots because he did not believe that Mr Trump represented the party’s cause.

“The president does not have a philosophical grounding or strategy,” he explained.  “He does not know the difference between the national interest of the U.S., and the interests of Donald Trump. There is confusion over the national interest and his personal interest, which is very dangerous for the country.”

Much of Mr Bolton’s criticism of America’s 45th president stems from his concern at the way Mr Trump runs his administration.

“He came in with very little personal knowledge of how government worked, and he had no interest in learning,” he claimed. “There has been no president in the past century who has followed this approach.”

And Mr Bolton, who previously served as US Ambassador to the UN under President George W Bush, says he felt compelled to write the book to let the American people know how their country was being run.

“When you are in a senior position you have an obligation to tell the truth,” he explained. “I was concerned after 17 months in the administration that he (Mr Trump) did not have the requisite competence to be president, and the American people need to know about that.”

Speaking of "senior positions", at least the previous two administrations weren't too concerned about veracity and competence.

There are countless examples of actions taken by President Trump that have nothing to do with his personal interests and everything to do with national interests. A quick browse through his list of accomplishments should make that clear.

Bolton is FOS and trying to sell a book.

The government that DJT came into didn't "work"; it was broken. Why should anyone take an interest in operating within a broken system rather than fixing it?

As for 'learning', there's a very excellent document that explains how the government should work. It is called "the constitution".

The Republican cause he wants to back? You mean the pro war stance that allows American jobs to be exported to China and India while importing their citizens to fill our tech positions? Yeah that's the stance! Lets get behind that. Go to the Democrat party Bolton it's a better fit.

I cannot respect anyone who would cast a vote for Biden, let alone someone who claims to be a Republican.

If Bolton had any philosophical grounding, there is no way he could cast a vote for Biden and that tells me Bolton is nothing but an opportunist.

What does Trump mixing his personal interests with the bussiness of the  people have to do with fixing a broken system? It's just plain ol' corruption and destruction of swamp containing norms for shortsighted personal gain.

All these REPUBLICANS who work directly with Trump are telling you the guy is crooked, doesn't know where his personal interests end and bussiness of the people begins....and your response is GOOD, I LIKE HIM MORE?

It's crazy...unless you like crooked of course.

Quite the contrary, the President DOES have a strategy, and that is to make America great again, and that strategy resonated with the American people who voted him into office.

The fact that Mr. Bolton is oblivious to this makes me wonder about his ability to comprehend basic facts and shines additional light on why he is no longer part of the administration.

Much of Mr Bolton’s criticism of America’s 45th president stems from his concern at the way Mr Trump runs his administration.

Sounds alot like sour grapes from someone who has an exceedingly high opinion of himself and was found lacking by his boss.

Once again Bolton displays a complete lack of awareness of the situation.

President Trump was elected to the office of POTUS because the American people were sick and tired of HOW GOVERNMENT 'WORKED' and wanted someone in office who put the NATION first and not their personal agenda.

Bolton comes off as a teenaged girl scorned when the quarterback wasn't interested.

If this is the quality of the 'revelations' and 'truths' that are contained in his book, the smart person would save their money and buy real toilet paper.

Have you ever been employed? Did you ever get fired and like the boss that fired you? Have you had an opportunity then to make a book that would net you millions? Yeah of course they will write about how corrupt he is, a book is not a legal document, it is an opinion.

You can't reason with someone who is determined to be unreasonable and perpetually in a vacuum.

Yeah I know but it's not about him. It's about the people out there that read this and don't comment. Maybe it gets to them that the left truly is full of nutters.

No one accused Bolton of being a liar, and yes, he quit or was fired before.

And it's not as if it's in a vacuum, what he says of Trump's behavior is supported by a lot of other testimony. Trump was IMPEACHED for exactly the pattern of mixing conduct of foreign policy and personal interests that Bolton describes.

You're lying.
